Wanna remove cat

670 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Grannynational
i think my car runs slower with the cat on than when it had the test pipe on. Wanna run the Test pipe on the street again. Well after I get my next emissions test I'm planning to put the test pipe on. Did you ever remove the cat by yourself in the garage with just the front end up on stands?

Yeah if it hasn't been on too long you can do it.

Always use neverseize on the bolts and studs too.

You may have to loosen the THDP to gain enough room.

You may need a BFH if you used a crush clamp on the cat. conv. to THDP.

Depends on the install and corrosion you may need a torch on the cat. studs to loosen them.

A fun job for sure.

Hee hee... I changed my cat out for an open dump last night in under 10mins.

Open dumps sound great!

If the cat is stuck on the pipe, you can use a die grinder with a cutter wheel to cut through the outer pipe (not the inner pipe) lengthwise at the clamp area to allow it to expand some. Don't get carried away with it and you may not even have to weld it back up to keep it from leaking. Worked for me!
get some sort of torch and head up the the pipe, it will expand and slide right off. Even a small propane torch will work from your local hardware store.

Is it a good idea to remove the THDP and move it forward a little to get the cat out? I don't want to have to remove/loosen the exhaust hanger to get the cat out
Yes.
