LONDON Jul 11, 2006 (AP)— Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" largely written by Barrett was a commercial and critical hit.

Barrett's behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968. He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England.

The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.

He was, for the most part, nuttier than squirel turd and I'm surprised he lived as long as he did. Still a shame, though. I look forward to the statements from the other Floyd members as I've always wondered what their take on him is....I s'pose I'll never get a candid response to that, though. Was "Wish You Were Here" really written about him, or is that just a myth?

The whole album was about him. They dragged him into the studio and he broke down into tears.

He was the epitome of a tortured genious. Hell of a painter too, so I heard.

I don't know why everybody always calls him a geius. Without later Floyd albums nobody would remember him. He was good for '67 english psycho rock, nothing else. I tried many times to listen to early Floyd albums and they do not stand the test of time. And I'm a Floyd fan.

Being a Floyd fan I really didn't think he was still alive. I guess I assumed since he was so crazy he's bound to be dead after all this time...

Speaking of Floyd, anyone else have a tattoo to prove it? :) Here is mine...

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now theres a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the
Steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend,
You martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the
Steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper,
You prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and Ill be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And well bask in the shadow of yesterdays triumph, and sail
On the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner
For truth and delusion, and shine!

I personally think that David Gilmour is the musical force in the band. Great collectively though!

I don't mean to freak you out but it looks like you might have a malignant cancerous growth on your tatoo! It could turn into a very huge tumor if not treated!

So, when was the last time you saw Pink Floyd in concert? I saw them in July of 1994. It was wicked! The sound was amazing, it was by far the best sounding concert I have ever been to. You couldn't put a CD into your stereo and ask for better sound! :headbang: :headbang: And it looked like there was a smoke show coming from the stadium with all the Canadian Cannibas being smoked. :bong:

I've been very lucky over the years. I have seen Pink Floyd; all the tours, since 1974 except for "The Wall" [I couldn't get tickets to either of the two shows, not to mention I couldn't afford it].
They have been my favorite "rock" band since I was 13 years old. :rocking:
Yesssssss I am biased, but I do agree with forzfed & Evans.
They have always had the BEST sound [quadraphonic]. You could always hear "stereo" wherever you sat. IT WAS ALWAYS LOUD & very clear.

David Gilmore is the MAN behind the band. :egitar: Roger's britches got tooo big, he left cause he was better than the rest of the band. :dunno: LOL

:weed: :bong:
