Do you have the correct belt? Maybe it is slipping on the pulley. Should be #60635. Also, check to see if the wire from the battery to the back of the alternator is touching the exhaust manifold and burning.

belt is the gatorback in the correct length, idler is fairly new and seems to be fine. Ill check the wire from the battery when i get out there. Its a very distinct smell, ive never smelled it before, is it possible it got "stuck" in the hood insulator and im just smelling that? theres no smoke, just the smell

If the smell is coming from the alternator it will be too hot to touch. If it's within reasonable temperature when the smell occurs then it's something else. It might be overcharging from a bad regulator and cooking the battery. Test the back of the alternator while running to make sure it's putting out about 13v.

The regulator i believe is inside the alternator. If you can drive your car to one of your local auto parts stores they can test it on the car. It would be best to call them first though to see if they can do it for you. :yup:

thanks steve, ill look into that....STOMPN 6, ill do that tomorrow, however, the funny thing is ive driven it over 300 miles since i replaced it, and not one problem, just the smell. Its not as bad as it used to be, just very faint when i get out of the car after driving it. the alternator is not hot at all either. ill get it tested tomorrow to be sure, otherwise, i guess everything should be ok.
