Will it be worth anything time wise if I shed the stock steels for some alum rims" Or is this just a waste of $$ ?

Yes there is something to gain from lighter
rims. It's not just the difference between the weight of the rims you will gain but in
what is called rotating mass. If I remember right you take the weight of something rotating and multply it by 1.5 to get what it's weight is rotating.

I hope that answers your question

The reason I am keeping my GN wheels is because I've heard that you lose traction from lighter wheels, might be an old wives tale but I save money if I keep thinking that

As Neal says, reduction in rotating mass provides more gain that reduction in static mass. Every little bit counts. Don't be4 looking for 5 tenths, tho!
