How much play in the turbo is acceptable?

I removed the MAF pipe from the compressor side of the turbo.
There was a very thin coating of graphite or something similar coating everything.
The blades have not hit the sides, and there is very little wobble on the shaft.
However......
The shaft moves in and out about 1/8 to 3/16ths of an inch.
I'm assuming that is a bad thing. The car smokes very little if any.
Any and all opinions please!

I thought as much. Is there a chance of the turbo flying apart in the near future, sending metal into the engine?
The blades do not touch the housing at all.

Sure there is, even witha new one. But with that wear I would either replace it or get it built. That gray **** is probley metal shavings that are coming out of the oil seal.
