Heavy duty or regular adjustable wastegate?

1034 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Steve Wood
I purchased my TE51 from Modern Muscle 3 years ago. I'm wondering how I can tell if the wastegate is a regular adjustable unit or the heavy duty type. Would there be a number or something on the wastegate?

you should know it when you hook it up....if you set the rod to say about a 1/8" of tension on the arm and the boost goes to 17-18#, then it is a hd model..

If you have the old actuator, and a fish type scale for larger fish, you could pull them both the same distance and see if one has a stiffer spring than the other.

Mine was regular style from Modern Musclecar during the Sale Event they had on that turbo.

Just my .02.

You may tell by the number. What is it, and I'll check with the ones I have?

I can't find the number on the wastegate. GUess I'm looking in the wrong place. Where on the wastegate is the number located?
If you have a regulated air compressor just see how much psi. it takes to start to move the thing.

I believe the stockers start to move around 12-13psi. air pressure.

to make the above more accurate, pull the hose off the wastegate solenoid and plug it with a golf tee or stick or bolt, etc...

The car should produce the amount of boost corresponding to the wastegate spring. It does not get any simpler than this.

Oh yeah that's an easy test too!

I like to work a bit at the answer.

Don't ignore Steve he gets cranky.

Then again he is usually right.

what if I have the BSTC on? Should I turn that off before doing the test?
once you pull the hose off the solenoid and plug the hose, it does not matter what is on or off...
