Me too! As you said they are too short and bent in the wrong places for these new tanks. I even bought new straps and they were no better. I got the drivers side almost mounted and was going to try a longer bolt on the other side. The new tank is bigger than the original one on my 87 T type!!
Gas tank straps
I am unable to connect the straps on 86 g/n gas tank. It's like there to short I've tried attaching the straps from the rear and from the front. The tank is supported with the jack.
