Electric exhaust cutout

840 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  BuickGN Boosted
I am currently testing an electric exhaust cutout on my car with the intentions of possibly selling it from my website. It bolts right on to a typical 3" test tube with the 3 bolt dump plate on it.

It's not that I am too lazy to remove the 3 wings nuts off the plate! I wanted something that I could do on the fly. Have had it on my GN for a few miles now and the best part so far was coming up to a stop light and seeing some guy working on a Mustang. Pushed the button and opened up the plate and the look on his face was priceless when I took off from the light! Little ways down the road and hit the switch to close it back up and back to quiet motoring.

You can also open the plate to wherever it sounds best. I was actually driving around with the plate about 1/3 open and it sounds pretty good. You can really hear your turbo spooling up, that's for sure.

Installation is pretty easy. Removed the existing plate from the exhaust cutout and bolted on the motorized plate. Ran the wire along the trans crossmember away from the exhaust and driveshaft and brought it into the car thru the grommet for the shifter cable. I pulled the power and ground for the motor from the wires running to my gauge pod that is located on the front of the console. Drilled two holes in the pod, one for the switch and one for the indicator light that lets you know when the plate is fully closed or open.

Is there any interest out there for possibly going into production on these? Probably would be somewhere in the $100-$125 range. I will post some pics later tonite when I get home.

I don't think that is the same one....
I hope Mark explains this piece better, and I don't like the idea of what can happen to the motor with the heat, and elements geting to it.

I like the idea of a plate, and spring tension. Under high boost, the plate would open, overcoming spring pressure.

Actually cosmo those two factions are not doing business together anymore from what I have been told.

I am dealing with the guy who invented it and we are trying to perfect it for the Turbo Regals. Just testing the waters to see if there is any demand for it. I have it on my car right now and I love being able to make some noise when I want yet be able to quiet the car down if I spot a friendly law enforcement officer or the wife is in the car. I guess it goes back to the days of owning my supercharged big block Chevelle. I like to make a little noise pulling into a cruise or show. I know a lot of people like stealth but this gizmo offers both.

I will be trying to put a lot of miles on the car in the coming weeks as long as our spring like weather continues here in the Northeast.

Just in case no one saw this on the "other" board!

Here's some pics of the installation!

Myself and at least one of my friends would be interested. We were looking at the ones that Empire was making, but at the time it was questionable if the unit could hold up to the heat. Do you have anything to add?

Let me know. I've bought from you in the past, the parts were good, so I'd expect these to be the same.

Thanks,
-Banning.

Have you had any hooked up w/ a THDP dump yet?
Actually that is my next project! Will be going to a THDP in early January. As long as it is a standard 3 bolt 3" flange it should work.
