Brake options?

456 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  salvageV6
Well I have fallen in love completely with my GN for having it a little over a month and with some slight headaches but overall the car is f-in badass except for BRAKING power!! help I have looked into the Baer brakes and yes it is lovely but also at the cost of 1200 bucks. Besides the 12" rotor conversion has anyone ever tried or can provide any feedback on the willwood brake setup? I know the rotors are a 1/4 inch smaller than the 12' conversion but I fgured the calipers still provide a better stopping ability. Or can slotted rotors and better pads really make the difference. Btw i also have converted brake system to vac setup not powermaster. TIA

What is your complaint about the brakes?
I have vacuum & they are decent. Not A-1 but no major complaints. I do have the bigger s 10 cylinders in mine.
Easy my friend easy...hehe No complaint but of course it's not a BMW braking system either and would never expect that but of course I would love to shorten braking distance when I am hauling ass instead of coming right up to someones bumper...I too have the s10 cylinders but just looking for a bit more if possible..If not f-it.. :)

Different pad materials and drilled rotors may help a little. But any major improvement will require much more money like you know about.
At least you don't have to worry about getting rear ended from stopping too fast wink
Good one!!! headbang
So did the vaccuum brake conversion improve stopping power??

Thanks,

Ravi

Not really, A good working powermaster stops just as good. They are expensive to repair so many converted to vacuum.
I'm switching over to vacuum sometime this fall or so. Anywho. a friend of mine told me a past TR he had was converted to Vacuum. And 1 day he was haulin' ass and a traffic light they were approaching was changing colors.
He went to use the brakes and the pedal was rock hard. Like there was no vacuum. After a short bit. The pedal went down like it should have.
My questions are:
What do you think caused it?
Would a auxilary Vacuum can help out.

TIA
This is from going from a boost/no vacuum situation to a braking situation. No vacuum means hard pedal. An additional vacuum supply won't help. I never hear TTA guys talking about this situation. I wonder why.
Yeah, I wonder why the TTA guys don't have this problem. Or anybody else that runs vacuum brakes. IF you are runnng WOT on a camaro, or a mustang, there is no vacuum, or at least not enough to operate power brakes. So why does a GN have a problem with vacuum power brakes? Is it just that the check valves being used are not holding against the boost? Do the TTAs have a better check valve?
By the way, I looked at the Wilwood, and I thought they were about the same size as the stock brakes, unless you get the high cost version, which puts you back in the same ballpark as the Baers. The 12" conversion from Robert Adams seems to be the best for the buck.

TTA's came with 1LE brakes all around. So I would think they won't need as much pressure applied to stop then our brakes. Sounds good anyway wink

The 1LE rotors on the front of my T make a world of difference. The PM sucks with the larger B-body calipers tho. I am doing the vac conversion this winter, using a dual diaphram booster and the larger B-body master cylinder. :D

Thanks for the input from all you guys, more than likely gonna just go for the gusto and get the Baer's as soon as I save enough funds. Again thanks again fellas. thumb_up
