I would coat both sides with Ultra Copper and put the lip towards the more corroded face, otherwise, lip up.

AND, once you intsall it, you will warp the surfaces, and be doomed to ALWAYS needing a gasket. Those surfaces were not designed to require gaskets.

Hmm... this one is only 1.5 months old.

The gasket is already in and working fine.

Too little too late boys.

So, if it's been in that long, what was the purpose of the original question?????
Little late to worry about which way it's facing now ??
Could have saved you a lot of future heart aches had you asked this before the install.

ok ya lost me here guys, how does the copper gasket warp a steel face?
the copper should squish when tightened thus formin a seal right?
so how would the softer metal cause a steel flange to warp?
and its a full face gasket at that i cant see it.
please enlighten me..

It may be copper, but it's thick and very hard, especially in the center where that raised lip is. It doesn't squish flat, but rather resists doing so, and all the strain is on the outer edges out where the bolts are. These "ears" tend to bend toward each other through all the heat cycles (happens with any gasket in there, the softer the worse). The bolt ears being slight drawn toward each other will now leave huge gaps when trying to bring the turbo and header together without a gasket (as they were meant to be used).

Dave,

Today is November 23, 2002 06:23 PM.

That is the difference of about 1.5 months.

The gasket was installed about a day after this post.

I am sorry that you don't approve. (No, not really)

I "planed" both surfaces with a sharpening stone before the install... but since the header and turbo are from two totally different cars they still wouldn't mate up properly due individual warpages over the last 15 years. So, in goes the gasket and some copper Permatex.

Please don't make me out to be an idiot.
And I won't treat you like a fool.

Take care and Happy US Thanksgiving!

I wasn't trying to.

I guess I wasn't following the time line carefully enough.

Just trying to save you some grief.
