Question - is the air conditioning compressor in an 87 GN the same as any others in more modern cars? My friend has one that has gone bad and the dealership wants 800 bucks for a new one. I suggested the salvage yard but I don't know what other cars might have the same compressor.

I priced a remanufactured one for an '87 at Discount Auto Parts for $99.00. They had it in stock and it was remanufactured by FourSeasons, which is a reputable company. Any time you open the AC system, remember to get it vacuumed out to remove contaminants that kill AC systems.

TR's use an R4 compressor with a six pole clutch.

I bought a rebuilt also for around $100 don't forget the accumulator and new oil and freon and to vacuum the system out first.

Mine even worked today in the 101 degree heat.
