One of the Two Turbo Century Free Spirit Pace Cars Found!!!

I have pictures of the original 1976 Century Free Spirit Pace Car that has a turbo'd 3.8 carb putting out 307 HP. This car is one of two that exists however I do not know where the other one is. Also a few decals have been added since it paced the Indy 500. It says driven by Parnelli Jones on both sides above the wheel wells, and on the door, it was added that it either competed in the Pikes Peak race in 76. I was amazed to see this car and I almost missed it. It is all original and mint. The car has just under 3500 miles and is a beauty. The engine is a little bit taken apart as they are trying to get it to run before they bring it to shows. The car has been in storage since the early 80s I was told. I will let you guys guess where the car is located as you can see a bit of the place through the garage doors. This car is a beauty though and is kept in a very nice collection along with GNX#500 with about 50 miles on it. I hope that was maybe a little clue.

Yep it is in the Buick Gallery in Flint. I didn't see those 3 other pace cars even though I would have loved to. Does anybody know what ever happened to the 2nd pace car.

I've heard through magazine stories and just general gossip that the second pace car was always given to the winner of the Indy 500. You know somewhere I have a Johnny Lightning 2 car Pace Car set from 75 or 76 and IIRC the winner was Al Unser Sr. Since the Unser family is noted for being DUI most of time it wouldn't surprise me if it was indeed wrecked on the peak and was crushed in the boneyard many years ago. Now I have seen some of these cars for sale in Hemmings and DuPont Registery so I'm thinking that is true to a point. The bad part is that they are always for sale by the second, third or sixth owner. The ad where Rick Mears was selling his Corvette pacer sticks in my mind for some reason.

I have heard that one of each pace car pairs is kept at he Indy 500 Mueseum.

I don't think that many of cars are street legal from the manufacturer.

That makes more sense to me. Just look at the 83 Riviera. One in the Indy musuem and the other in Flint with GM. Maybe on the bone stock pacers that the winner recieved one.

Turbofish38, this collection is in no way owned by GM. These cars are privately owned by the Sloan Museum. GM donated many of the cars including the 50-mile GNX#500. This museum is funded by the Sloan Museum, BCA, etc. The curator says that GM tries to get these cars back for their heritage collection all of the time but this museum keeps them so the public can see them still. The 76 Century Pace Car is one GM wants back a lot as I was told.

If you like that car, check this out. This might be the first "Grand National" (much more so than that Red '83 GN).
