I found this website with some nice tools. Check out the Murry split dies and the Thread Checkers. If you click on the split dies, there is a video that explains their use. Me likey.

Threads are cut on a 60° angle so anything that can be put in a vise wouldn't take long to fix with a 3 corner file. No need to gage the size or pitch of the threads either but if you needed to repair threads on a piece of machinery then the split die set would save you a lot of time.
(BTW, these kind of items are why Snap-On carries those humongous toolboxes...)
