 |  Sam Phillips Dies Memphis, Tn; Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records dead at 80. Began Sun Records in 1952 & began recording R&B stars like like BB King, etc. Signed Elvis to his first contract which he sold for $35K to RCA in 1956. Also helped launch carreers of Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty & Charlie Rich. Sam was elected to the R&R Hall of Fame in 1986.
