Labrador Retriever Owners

I'm considering a lab puppy. I've been told that they shed a lot. How big of a problem is it? Any other comments about the breed?

Great dogs, but, they do shed a lot...a whole lot!

When they are done Shedding they shed more...

Lab Puppies are full of energy for the first 2 or three years.

You will also want to Crate train your dog, They will chew up everything you own while they are puppies.

Our Chocolate lab is 2 1/2 and just settling down. we can leave here out of the crate now and she is good, no more chewing of furniture and remotes.

Very loyal dog, great with our 3 kids and very playful.

Hates being alone...

Good luck

Here's my problem: Because I'm a teacher, I'm home til late August. After that I'm gone from 6AM to 4PM. Is that too long to leave a dog alone, in a crate? I could leave him in my laundry room too. There's not much to destroy in there.
Maybe I need to get an older dog.

imo a puppy would have a problem holding it that long but after he got a few months old that lenth of time should be fine. i think getting a puppy would be best. most older dogs somebody gets rid of have issues.

Get one! Best dog breed ever! Yeah they shed, and will chew up your house (for the first couple years) if you don't use a cage. The cage seems cruel, but they adapt to it easily. Buy chew bones by the gross..

They love to learn tricks take to training very well. Mine could open the refrigerator and bring me a beer. I just needed to remember to take the towel off the handle to keep the food safe when I was out of the house.

Crate training at a young age will teach the dog to hold it. A dog's natural instinct will tell it not to relieve itself where it sleeps. It may do it a couple of times, but it will be the most horrific thing to the dog. I started my dog in the crate at 8 weeks old and he's never had a problem holding it in for 8-12 hours.

Adopt one & save his life! I have been looking at a Sheppard/Lab mix but decided to wait a bit longer.

Don't buy a pure bred, this only encourages puppy mills and dog breaders to pump out inbred animals. There are plenty of free dogs available, I don't care what area you are in. The mutts for free are usually the best dogs to have.

Timevacuum on this board just got a black lab puppy. We just got one too, a mix of some sort that's about 1 year old. Working on the crate thing!

I agree 100% My neice & her husband just got a 10 acre farm for her business. She is a dog trainer & animal behavior specialist (something like that?) No pure breds she says for those reasons plus they are usually more screwed up mentally & physically than mix breeds.
