| I want a Z06 | How do you tell someone they SMELL really bad? I always used to think that these jokes about IT people were made up until I met our Server Admin. Now I totally 100% understand where these jokes come from. Most people that I know in IT are very cool, and not the typical geek/dorks that everyone makes fun of. (They also take showers) This guy seems really nice but he has the absolute worst BO smell of anyone I have ever met. I'm talking, just played 48 hours of Football in 100 degree heat and didn't shower smell at 8am. There are 8 of us that sit in this enclosed area and its SOOO bad. Being the new guy, I get to sit in the cube over from him as everyone else has tried to move away. I mean really, there is NO WAY that this guy can't know that he stinks. I'm talking about walk 10 feet from you and your like WTF is that smell bad. I thought about leaving a deodorant stick on his desk but man thats mean... ![]() Other than that, the job is cool. |

You need deodrant in a can! And start spraying it on him! Or you could accidently get him wet and spill some shampoo and liquid soap on him. Do your eyes water when your around him? Maybe he showers but just never washes his cloths, or when he does they are so entrenched in BO that they must be burnt. Buy him a new shirt. For the Love of God Mike, take a shower!!! |

Here is something to consider. I asked the same question in a management class a few years ago. The instructor said that one co-worker of his had a terrible problem, and they would put a stick of deodorant on his tool box, and leave him new shirts, too. One day the individual came up to him and said he was quitting his job. He stated that he couldn't take the harassment any longer. See.......he had terminal cancer and showered at least three times a day, and he knew he smelled, but nothing would help, except death. Maybe you can talk with the person and bring it up. If it is a medical condition, it might be easier to mentally forgive him. If it is a hygene isue, file a complaint with your HR dept. State that you are unable to perform your work. I had to confront a co-worker (I was his lead) about his hygene problem. (he smelled like he rolled in pig "poo" on his way to work. ) I approached him and said "Hey, "Joe" (not real name), I have been recieving complaints from everyone about your hygene. Do you have a problem wearing deodorant?" he said, "NO!!! I wear deoderant!" I simply responded, "Change Brands!" He said OK, and was pretty cool about it. Well.......the next day, he showed up to work smelling like he rolled in pig poo laced with NBA/NFL tube socks! So, I went around and had everyone on my crew sign a petition and I laid it on the second level managers desk. I told him (the manager) I put something on his desk that needed immediate attention. They sent him to our medical office to discuss hygene. Nothing changed, though, and we finally transfered him out of the area after he passed out one day for no reason. (probably from his own stink) Good luck. You do NOT have to work in that enviornment. If it offends you, go to your HR dept, and file a real complaint. If they don't do anything, spray the dude with air freshener. (when 2nd shift employees showed up to work, they would spray air freshener into the air conditioning unit.) Some people have NO clue about hygene, or just plain don't care. Bring a "FART" tablet to work and let it off in his cubicle to gag HIM!!!!!!!

Sounds like your IT guy is our IT guy!! Hired him about 6 mo ago. Same problems, except our IT guy also owns 10 cats. So to the wierd smell issues, we also have to put up with seeing him in his cat hair covered cloths!!

In sincerity, being the new guy you should not approach him directly unless you have a strong relationship built. Even then it would have to be far from earshot of anyone else. Embarrassing him would be hurtful and potentially damaging to you. Best to get HR to handle it being that they usually have little to do anyhow other than payroll (a totally separate rant). | |

Something that's worse than Mikes' problem IMO is women who put on the whole bottle of perfume before going to work. I remember one co-worker who did that and I literally could not breathe if I was within 3 feet of her.
