Geeks, some input please

Going to order a new system (home pc) tonight. I don't do games but do surf the net and do Google things I want to research. The Buick forums are my most frequent thing . I suppose when you get down to it I don't use a pc all that much compared to other folks in the way of downloading large files and such. Hell, I don't even know how to cut and paste and basic stuff like that yet actually ( I had never turned on a computer until about 02 ). With all this in mind tell me if you think what I plan to purchase should last me for a good while or not please. I'm looking at Intell core2 duo processor E4500, 2.2 gb 2mb cache 800 fsb.A 128 ATI radeon HD 2400 pro for a video card. For the memory I'm thinking 500gb serial ata2 at 7200 rpm's (it must have a forged crank ha ha) then a 3 gbDDR2 SDRAM @667 mzh. I have XP currently but am going to Vista ( I know I know what some of you think about that OS). Do you guy's think this will last the wife and I for say 5-6 years? Thanks I appreciate any input on this.

How about a MAC? Screw Winblows. Vista is the junkiest bloatware I have ever seen. Once they dont support XP any longer, I'm switching.

For Surfing the web and checking email it is total overkill.

Go to the Apple Store and check out the iMacs or the Mac Mini if you already have a nice flat panel display.

For Surfing the web and checking email it will be great, won't get filled with spyware, malware, and other garbage.

I use Mac, Windows, and Linux. For Home use the Mac by far is the best for people that don't know a lot and don't want to know a lot. They just want it to work when they use it.

BTW, 3 gigs of ram to check email?

Paul - that would be a nice desktop. But I'd expect 3-4 years out of a PC.

Don't worry about Vista - it's not as bad as everyone complains about.

Both my home laptop and desktop are vista. Everyone bitched about XP when it came out too.

A Mac would be a good choice as well.

As Mike said - find a local Apple store and play with one. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I have had this one since 03 I think? It's probably about shot. Yes, I heard a lot of negatives on XP too. I have talked to several folks that have Vista for an OS and no negatives.

Jeremy is there a way I can tell for sure how much longer this pc I have now can last me without having to load it up and go to a computer store? If it has some life left for awhile I can put it in the basement for my own use maybe.

Nothing wrong with Dell for the average person. He's not going to run the US missle defense system on it. The new Mac's have bugs too. AppleDefects.com - Customer Complaints & Issues - Defective Apple Products, iPod, MacBook, iMac, Mac problems I've been using Dell with good results.

What are the specs on the computer you're using now? Maybe it just needs to be reformated because of spyware?

I'm not saying there's no defects in any other computer brands, but Dell uses proprietary wiring codes and boards.
Basically,if you ever need repair or upgrades,it's off to Dell.
Don't ask your local geek shop to work on it.
If I was Buf',I would check the local shops first.
He may just find some sweet deals there.
They're also usually more than willing to help with problems or to customize.
Try that with Dell or any of the big names.

I believe that's on older stuff. Do a search and you will see most of all issues have been solved with a little nip and tuck.
