| ok, i just got "terminated" from my job today, because i failed to check the brakes properly on a guys van, when they were actually metal to metal, and so my employer had to pay for new rotors. basically, my question is this: is there a law or anything saying that non ASE mechanics cant be, i guess, trusted?? or anything like that, since im only 18 and my job before this was at Safeway and ive never had a job at a shop, so, NO, im not ASE certified. Is it just me or is this guy kinda stupid for trusting someone with absolutely no experience whatsoever????? if any of you are ASE certified mechanics and no anything about this, please let me know any info. Thanks in advance!!!

| um, no...there is no law. You screwed up MAJOR...maybe your employer figured if you couldn't diagnose something this simple and obvious, you weren't right for the job. It's their right AND responsibilty to make sure they have people doing the job that CAN do the job. You screwed up got fired move on... |

| Why don't you get a job a something you are good at doing. It seemed like your ex-employer expected you to hit the water swimming, thats not uncommon although its not always right of them. Basically there isn't anything you can do about the termination unless you are prepared to spend much time and effort to fight to be somewhere you aren't wanted....then there still is no garrantee that you will win that fight....actually its highly unlikely that you will win that fight. It is water under the bridge. If you are getting ready for a tech school then whatever job you get now isn't a career move eh? If I were you I'd get a job as a cook at Hooters headbang .

| DON'T WORK AT HOOTERS! I spent 2 years in that kitchen, the girls are all money hungry bitches and the food is gross. And on top of that, the pay sucks.

| You are correct but it depends on what your state laws are and how the shop advertises its help. If they have a sign up or advertising that says "All work done by certified mechanics" or Some reference to expert or experience repairs you may have a case. But legal fees will cost more than you can claim. At best settle for non challenged unemployment insurance.

| You still may have a chance to run for Governor. None of them can do brake jobs either. Good luck in your job hunt.

| A couple quick questions. how long did you work at the shop when the manager asked you to look at the brakes? Also why didn't you ask someone else to look at it with you? (or maybe you did dunno ) There is no such law. It seems to me your trying to put some of the responsibility on the manager, the fact that he trusted you to do a brake check says he had confidence in your ability. Even with "no training at all", it doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at how worn brake pads are or to run your fingers along the rotors. But then again I've been a tech for 10 years now. However, apprenticeships are usually carried out in "levels". He's 18 years old and has very little experience[by his own admission]. So my original question still stands:What's your title around there? Tire change guy? Tune up guy? First year app. up to general repair with supervision? Just walked in the door yesterday? Oil change and easy repairs only? See what I'm getting at? Sometimes bosses like to place responsibilty on app.'s for stuff they're not qualified to do. I know,I've been there. angrymou
