Anyone ever turbo a small industrial engine?

Has anyone ever added a turbo to a small v-twin engine?

I want to use a briggs 23hp. twin for a small offroad car,but would like to add some hp(20-25 hp) and keep it reliable. What better way than a turbo right.Plus it would sound cool.

I thought i saw a post about someone using a turbo from a small turbo-diesel truck ,but i cant find it.

Fabbing the exhaust and intake stuff is no problem but the jetting and timing would lose me.Can the carb even handle it?

Anyway please post your thoughts.

There is some websites and videos on youtube of people pulling it off, but there is no major horsepower improvements i have seen.

If you have got a Vanguard engine, I would recomend looking at Cushman eagle websites and forums. Those guys remove the Husky engines and put the B&S engines in. With a little work here and there they can make around 50 horsepower sometimes.

I know a couple people into the cushmans and they all talk about the power people are making with those motors. I don't know what all is involed but of course you have to work on the governor a little.

Most of those lawn mower engines are not the most well made engines and I don't think they can handle a whole lot of boost.

Actually the Vangard is a pretty good small engine. I'd put it in there with the honda and kawasakis of similar power ratings.

All I know is back in the 50s they sold turbo kits for N/A tractors, now back then most tractors had all forged steel parts inside of them and the turbo kits still managed to blow tractor engines all over the place. So that makes me question how a little lawn mower engine with softer metal parts can handle very much boost.

I don't think the carb could handle it. I know that if you want to turbo a quad, that you need a fuel injection set up, and I'm gonna take a gues that quad carbs are similar to briggs carbs. I think the reason is that the carbs aren't a blow through carb like you would use on a car with a turbo or a blower.

A turbo would be way cool. For simplicity's sake, what about nitrous?

Why not port the head and raise the compression, cam, etc.

The first Buick turbo V6s are carburetored, but those are high flowing Qjets and eQjets.

Ever been to tractor pull where they run Nitro through a Briggs? Thick metal clamps just to keep the head from popping off.

I would think as long as you keep detonation under control than doubling the HP would be a piece of cake.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I did find a site that specializes in briggs v-twins.They do all the old hotrod tricks ,cam, porting, high rpm springs, alum. rods, etc. This is the direction i will probably go.Unless i can find a really small turbo for cheap.

The vanduard engines are oil pressurized so oiling the turbo shouldnt be a problem.

I did find a company(blouch turbo) that makes a small turbo and actually sounds like it would be perfect and easy to do but the price (900$) is a little steep.(specially since i have a stock turbo on my T)

Thanks again.PS if any one sees a mini turbo "fall of the truck" grab it.

Thought about a blower, might be easier.
