Lightbulb Why are the Diesel pump nozzels bigger than the Gas pumps?

I'll tell you why! I saw it today in utter amazement! I swear, you can't make this stuff up!

So I'm driving home from work in my Truck and I stop at the gas station to fill it up. There are 4 islands with 2 pumps so you can have 16 cars filling up at a time, the left island has both Diesel and Gas pumps on both sides for a total of 4 diesel/gas pumps.

The gas nozzles are black, the diesel nozzles are bright school bus yellow. So I'm standing there putting diesel in the truck when a Toyota Camry pulls in behind me. This women in her late 30s gets out and leaves the car running, drivers door open, its blaring hip/hop music loud enough that everyone can hear it.

I watch as she swipes her credit card, opens the gas door, and then reaches for the Yellow Diesel nozzle. I yell out "Hey, you don't want to put diesel in your car!" She can't hear me, the radio is blaring. Now I'm kinda amused, wish I had a camera phone so I'm watching her now.

I watch for probably 60 seconds as she tries to fit the diesel nozzle into the filler neck. She tries twisting it, putting it upside down. She hangs the nozzle up, picks it back up and tries it again. As if it will magically fit now! hahah

Then she gets frustrated, hangs up the pump, closes the gas door and gets back in her car. I'm laughing at this point, it still amazes me how dumb people are. Oh but its not over!

She gets back out and... wait, was that... Yes, I am really seeing this. She pulls out a pocket knife!! She opens the gas door and proceeds to start trying to cut the filler neck opening!

She looks over at me, I kinda smirk and reach over and pickup the black nozzle on my pump and point back to the pump and say "Gas". She looks at the island and is finally like "Oh".

WTF!

A couple of weeks ago, I stopped into a Wawa (our equivilent to a seven / eleven) to see gas all over the place. As I walk into the store an employee is having a melt down on some women who is hanging her head in shame.

It seems she pulled out and forgot to rehang gas nozzle back on the pump, after filling up. Ripped the nozzle right out of the pump, and dragged it about 20 feet before she realized what happened. Manager of the Wawa went into orbit...

hahaha thats pretty funny but thats why they created those break-away hoses.... i've seen that happen on more than one occasion... still never understood how somebody could be that oblivious to everything around them...

And than there are the retards that put gas in a diesel because the nozzle will fit.

I've sold many a ABS module and valve because some moron poured what ever was the cheapest(always ATF) fluid available thinking that just because the idiot light was on, meant that it just needed fluid.

Whats really sad is all of the lawsuits out there because of all this mass stupidity. One of my rental car fleets called up one day for a fuel pump for a 02 Caviler. I say WTF? Those cars go to the auction after a year. They said it used to be evidence in a lawsuit against them. Some dumba$$ customer opened the radiator cap when the motor was hot and burned themselves. The car sat in the parking lot until the case was settled and the fuel pump siezed up from sitting that long.

I witnessed this happen at an Autozone. Guys in the Autozone ran out, but too late. Idiot wasn't hurt, but fluid went all over the lot. He was very lucky.

I had a raghead back in the 70s (Iranian) come in and buy a gallon of Prestone from me. Next day he's back with the battery he bought at our store a year earlier and got mad when I wouldn't warrant it (because he put the antifreeze in it)

One reason why you can't pump your own gas in NJ I guess.

I witnesses a girl pull up to the vacuum/air compressor machine with a low tire. She got out and put .50c in the vacuum side of the machine. The vacuum turned on and she tried filling up the tire with the air compressor hose. I guess you really gotta be an idiot to not know the difference in sound between an air compressor and a vacuum.

I can't remember the color of her hair, but I do remember she looked like she was late to her shift at 'Rachels'.

Actually it is just the colors of the handles. Most of the diesel pumps pump quite a bit faster that a gas pump and need a larger out put nozzle. The reason the gas nozzle is smaller is back in the seventies when unleaded gas first came onto the scene they put a restrictor in the filler neck(Look down in there next time you fill up it is still there) so you couldn't put leaded gas into your car. Somebody got the golden idea to sell a little spout that went on the end of the nozzle on the regular leaded gas so you could put leaded into your unleaded car and I would guess ruin the cat.
