Comcast vs. DSL

I know just about everyone that CAN have Comcast HAS it not just for cable but Broadband.... me too. Well recently I lost connectivity for a week, had to make an appointment for them to come out and they give you a window of say 4 hours in which you have to be there. I was and they got me going again but to be honest I am not 100% happy with the service since I have also had bad reception problems on the cable. They seem to come out about every 4 mos. to fix something. We have DSL in the area now and I have been giving it some thought since it is about $30.00 cheaper. A friend of mine that made the switch said he doesn't see a difference in what each does except when gaming which I don't do on-line. He said all the HS download stuff depends a ton on where it is coming from and their speed. I called Comcast today to see about a credit for the time I lost my service and then asked some questions about my bill and the Lady asked why I was asking. I told her to maybe make the switch to DSL since Comcast hasn't set the World on fire. She offered me a better deal of $29.99/mo compared to the $43.00/mo I am paying so that was cool. DSL will save $15.00/mo more if it isn't much of a downgrade. I started out with dial-up so how bad could it be?

Which things are noticeably faster? Pages load faster than with dial-up and downloads are faster. Just wondering if I would really see it all that much. Not much Paris Hilton porn to look at anymore

Around here DSL is limited to 760k or so. Cable is much faster here, don't know about DSL in other areas.

I've always known Comcast to have problems here in MD. I have Verizon DSL and haven't had a lick of trouble out of it. We have Comcast at work and it goes down somewhat frequently. Also, I've heard that this is a Comcast problem from others, but at work when we have a lot of people using the net (like at lunch time) it slows down quite a bit. Streaming of videos don't come down nearly as fast as 8am.

Cool

To be honest[around here at least] DSL speeds stay pretty much constant.
Cable speeds can vary different times of the day[depending on how many users are on your line].
I've played with both and use DSL.
I can easilly afford cable, but why?
The extra cost is a waste and what usually happens is your firewall and A/V protection programs negate any differences anyway.
Save your money.
Most of the computer techs I know are on DSL up here.
That tells me something.

DSL is going away. How can you compete with the cable companies offering download speeds in the 10mb range? DSL just can't do that. While it's impressive to think how fast you can transfer data over a copper phone line, it doesn't compare to a real broadband connection like cable.

A good speedtest web site is www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest . It will test your connection and then tell you what is typical in your area.

That's where I think maybe cable isn't all it is cracked up to be. At times mine acts weird and goes kind of slow. From what I understand is since it is shared if we have many in the Community on-line doing stuff at once it is slower. Also your download depends on where it coming from too, no?

Comcast credited me and dropped it down to $29.99/mo.

I have Verizon DSL and am perfectly happy with the speed, especially considering that it's only $14.95 a month.
