Interesting 4th of July response from Lowes.

I sent a letter to Lowes home office questioning the fact that everything is now in both English and Spanish. My letter went into detail regarding the history of this Country and the reason we still celebrate the 4th of July. Apparently lowes has a multicultural dept that thinks we no longer should be a English speaking Country. I for one have stopped spending my $$ there. I wonder if they except pesos for currency??

"Thank you for visiting us at www.lowes.com. We appreciate your interest in Lowe's and thank you for expressing your concerns with us. Your message will be forwarded to our Multicultural Department for review.

Lowe's is committed to maintaining a business environment of inclusion for our customers and business partners. This commitment was supported in February 1998 with the creation of the Lowe's Fairness Programs.

Valuing diversity is a strategic priority for Lowe's. We recognize that we offer home improvement products and services to every person in the United States - a nation built upon the diverse talents, cultures and perspective of the human race.

We are making diversity and inclusion a natural part of the way we do business. It is who we are, what we believe, and how we behave. This is important to Lowe's not only because it is good human relations, but also because it is good business.

Lowe's believes that the number one priority of the company is to focus on the customers' needs and find ways to meet those needs. Many of Lowe's Hispanic/Latino customers speak little or no English. Helpful signs in Spanish are just one way we are meeting the needs of this rapidly growing customer segment.

We appreciate receiving your feedback. If you have any further questions or comments, please send them to CustomerCare@Lowes.com.

Sincerely,

Josephine

Now, send them letters in German, Italian, and Russian asking why Lowes won't put signs in those languages. I guess if you're a legal resident they don't want your business

i wholeheartly agree with you on the multi language signs
both HD and lowes are doing it , and even the products they handle have dual language

pisses me off to no end to continue to see it go this way in the US , the straw for me was the stack of spanish learners manuals at the DMV , as if we dont pay enough for DMV fees they are spending thousands I'm sure on the printing of manuals in spanish , the fact they will let you take the test in several different languages is totally absurd

im sure we are not far from seeing all our road signs with both english and spanish , followed by our local street signs ,
this s-h- i -t it has to end

Autozone is another place like that.
Go to the online survey and its quite apparent that they have the same "multicultural" dept.
When in reality people whether they speak English or not will go where the prices are the best.
There are lots of companies with agendas.

What a load of diaper material.
Their number one priority is seperating the customer from his money. With no thought about the long term use of selling foreign crappe. Like a lot of US co.s in a few years they'll wonder what happened as stores start closing. Like the .com burst the continual dumb spending habits of Americans will come back to bite us.

seems like a damn good business principle to me...make it easy as possible to separate the customer from his money.

They get enough Brits, Germans, Russians, or Armenians coming thru the doors, I bet they will post signs in their languages also.

For Instance, the sign will say, "Restrooms, Banos, Loos"

It is a private company and I'm sure the stock holders see it as a money maker as Steve said. When the Govt. does it then it's another story

Personally I avoid Lowes & Home Depot whenever possible due to their prices being so far out of line. I can shop at my hometown small lumber yard and even at their marked up price it's competitive with Lowes and I get personal service, my materials are loaded for me and the drive is 6 blocks vs 6 miles.
For the non-building material items, I go to the Ace Hdwe a mile away when I need it now and shop online at McMaster Carr when I'm not in a hurry for the items. I did buy a freezer at Lowes the other day but it was the same price & brand as the Sears freezer and the drive was half as far.

MULTICULTURAL DEPARTMENT at a home improvement company Sounds like something Gothmog would be in charge of.

How about a department to hire more damn people to work at the checkouts?

Talking chew and taste your words before spitting them out

I don't see the hubub, bubs. Language is a means of communication, anything other than that or being attached to it is just a result of your own conditioning--cultural or otherwise, in other words, not actual.

To that end, if the businesses use the aforementioned vehicle for communicating (language) to get across to the many different tongues present in this country, so be it... As Steve said, from a business standpoint, it simply makes sense... this is a capitalist, acquisitive, more-more-more, strive/gain/compete country, no?

To the Original Poster, while explaining in detail the history of the holiday, did you reiterate to Lowe's that while we celebrated Independence Day, we continued with the slave trade, already killed off many natives and would later throw jpn. people into concentration camps... among many of sick things people have done (and still do) to themselves in this country and elsewhere?

Interesting how things change. I wonder what the future will hold?150 years ago this country was actually debating slavery. The entire concept seems so inherently evil now. How could anyone possibly be in favor of slavery? Yet, only 150 years ago the concept was being debated, and some saw nothing wrong with it.

Makes you wonder what issues we debate today will seem ludicrous to debate 150 years from now.
