Our Recipie car - First trip to the track

A couple weeks back I posted about a new car that my wife bought me. We posted a poll about what to do with the car and the result is that this will become a sort of recipie car where we put on a few parts and make passes to show the improvments as we go. To get that going we decided to base line the car as-is with no changes. This is a stock car, 73,000 miles, stock everything including plug wires, cat, valve springs and chip. Before we went to the track I set the boost at 15PSI and added a fuel pressure gauge and saw the FP was a little low (31 PSI) so I installed an adjustable regulator and went to get 5 gallons of VP 103 unleaded. Drove to the track, let it cool for about 30 minutes upped the pressure to 38, poured in the fuel (to about 1/4 tank of 93) and made a pass. 1 psi launch no wheel spin 14.58 at 94 MPH. Not bad considering that the fuel pressure only went up to 50 and then abruptly dropped to 41. I was watching the Scanmaster as I was going down the track and saw the O2 droping all the way down. It ended up at .689 with 2 degres of knock. Thanks god for the 103 gas . I decided to try one more to see how consistant it would be and launched it at 5 psi this time. I was expecting lots of tirespin but now it sort of layed down the 60 was better but still not great at 2.15, but it went 14.52 at 95. Only this time the O2 went down to .639 and we saw 5 degrees of knock right at the end of the track. Not want to change head gaskets and realizing "its not going faster" I packed up. I have since installed a Walbro pump and our new hot wire kit. I installed a commander chip and upped the boost to 17psi. The fuel pressure jumps up to 62 and is steady as a rock. When launching the car it now just blazes the tires. So now that we have those problems fixed we will return to the track and see how she does. Next up is doing the suspension and installation of a Translator Pro to see what sort of inprovment we can get just from that. This will be a daily driver type build up ending up with an untouched motor (except valvesprings) that goes mid 11's on pump gas (Razor's alky kit) and realistic street tires, not M/T's or something that can't be driven regularly and safely. We will also be posting this build up on our message board in the articles section and all the results will be there including timeslips. This should be fun! Suggestions on the build up will be considered let me know.

That is pretty cool. I have always wanted to get a base line of a TR and then do mods and see how much each one betters my ET.

I missed your other post, what year is this car? GN, T-Type, ?

BTW, I wish my wife would buy me a car. You are one lucky guy.

The link that you have here no longer works either.

Any updates as to how the car has changed or not changed?

Later AJ

Well we have made a few upgrades. We have added the MAFT Pro, 60lb injectors, fuel pump and hotwire kit, GT6131 turbo, PTE Stock location intercooler, 70MM throttle body and PTE upper (I wanted all 3" pipes in and out), 3" down & dual 2 3/4 exhaust. I had the turbo built with a 4" inlet and have a 4" maf pipe with a cone filter. Spool is instant using the pro as the boost control and even though I still have the stock torque converter in place. I have a 9" Art carr conveter sitting but at this point I have no plans to install it. The car is VERY strong pulls away from high/mid 11 cars, Will smoke the tires from a 30 roll. I am thrilled with how it runs and reallly do not want to change anything. (motor is still unopened with stock valve springs and all) The wideband is set to run at 11.6 to 1 air/fuel and the Pro just holds it there under WOT. 27 lbs of boost 110 octane, 24 degrees timining. I have an ALKY kit but need to find time to install it. I did Metco lower control arms with our 1 3/8 sway bar. which is a great set up but I am going to switch over to the UMI lowers and adjustable uppers.

Mike:

How do you like that TurboSmart 2 5/8 gauge looking boost controller? I am in the market and cant justify $700 for an innovative. I could probably get by with a simple BstC, but really want closed loop control.

Turbosmart is not closed loop. for the price of a closed loop controller, HKS, Apexi ......... You can get a T-Pro that is also closed loop boost
The eboost does work well however

I was going to make a post saying to put the T-pro on the car! Then I read that you did. I try to tell the local people on my website about it, but all I get is Maybe I'll just have to show em.

I give the T-pro some of the credit for not needing a converter. Everything is high flow on the intake and exhaust which also helps. Car drives better than new
