What ever happened to Jim D'Alessandro, Pete Barton...

guys like that from the early 90's?

Hi All,

I used to be in the Buick scene back in the late 80's and early 90's with my Turbo Buicks, but got out of it for a while. Starting to get back into it a little now, and have been checking out websites for good parts combos, what folks are doing now with their cars, etc (I got my 87 T down to 12.1's back in '95, but now looking for quicker of course).

Anyway, as I've been cruzin websites, I was noticing I dont hear much about the guys that were the heavy hitters back when I was into it, like Jim D'Alessandro, Pete Barton, Buddy Cox, guys like that. What happened to all those guys? I've read some things about D'Alessandro like he was kinda shady, is that true? And who's the new heavy hitters nowadays?

Jim

Copied and pasted from TB.com where I replied to you....

Jimmy D. was/is a shady character from what I heard and I think him and his shop 1/4 Mile Performance are done (as far as I know) and as such he's no longer around... Pete at ANS is still around, but I haven't seen or heard about his car in a long time so I'll ASSume it's sold.... Buddy Cox (another guy I haven't heard about in quite some time) so I'll ASSume he's out of the Buick game....

As far as Heavy hitters now the #1 guy is Bill Anderson here's a look at his car... It is the Quickest/Fastest single turbo Buick in all the land....

http://www.anderson-performance.com/Racecar%20Info.htm

There are several other guys I can mention, but you should've heard about John Gallina with his SS/DX Turbo Buick (fastest car in NHRA Super Stock and the first guy to break the 7 second barrier in SS).... Here's his website....

www.fastbuicks.com

There are several other names I can throw out there that would be considered heavy hitters or Big Dogs in the Buick community.... One other name that really comes to mind is Richie Kibler because he has been doing pretty awesome lately racing HU in a few of the 1/8th mile classes like Outlaw Pure Street and Limited Street....

Hopefully you remember LC (Lawrence Conley) and Kenny Duttweiler??? They no longer race Buicks but they are both still very involved in this community building/tuning cars and Kenny was involved with the R&D of the new TA Performance www.taperformance.com aluminum Buick V6 block....

I'm rambling and it would take me a LONG time to catch you up on this Buick stuff so use the search feature on this website (yes it can get you caught up) and check out www.gnttype.org

HTH catch you up some and Welcome

Jimmy D opened another 1/4 mile perf shop in Berlin NJ and stayed open for a few years. He was doing work on boats(so I was told) untill they got tired of him ripping em off and now that shop is gone..

I though Pete Barton's shop is still going?? no??

All info said on Jimmy D. seems to be correct. Pete Barton still runs ANS performance in the Chitown area. I believe he sold his yellow Buick but still has another. I seen Buddy Cox run in Bristol a few years ago and is still active (I think). L. Conley still has Buicks running but is also campaigning a twin turbo SBC. Kenny Duttweiller is active in building and R&D. You would have to ask one of the left coast guys if he still hit's the tracks out there.

Thanks for the catch-me-up Gentlemen. Pretty disappointing hearing the stuff about Jimmy D. I always really respected his accomplishments in the early days of Turbo Buicks. Guy did a lot to promote how fast our cars are. Did read something about guys claiming he was running some funky fuel additives at one point in his tube frame car, but either way, the guy was friggin flying for back then.

Anyway, I've done some looking around on different sites, man are folks flying with these cars with so little done to them. Everybody runs lots of boost nowadays! When I was last into it, 20#'s was a lot of boost. That aint 'sheet' nowadays, huh?

I heard the same. It was some sort of proplene (or something that sounded like that)that dissapated after a short time in gas. It was added just before a run and soom dissapeared after so no one coul ddetect it.. Thats what I was told..

The Additive he used was PolyPropeline, I checked with the Guys down in Chemicals (Sunoco) here way back in '97-'98 when this came up on TB.com and they said that it was "Sort" of like NitroMethane in the Combustion Chamber in that it would GREATLY promote a Fast burn and YES on a Turbo application with high Boost levels it would (for a very brief time) promote much higher horsepower, much like Nitrous, but it could simply be added to the tank. So..there was truth to the rumor!!!!

Actually, I believe the additive referred to as "Poopy" is usually Propylene Oxide.

Quote:
"Propylene oxide is a volatile, flammable liquid that is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. It is highly dangerous when exposed to heat or flame. It has a violent reaction with hydrogen chloride, chlorosulfonic acid, hydrogen fluoride, and oleum. It should not be stored in the presence of acids, bases, chlorides of iron, aluminum, and tin, or peroxides of iron and aluminum; any of these may cause violent polymerization. Propylene oxide is miscible with most organic solvents, and forms a two-layer system with water. It is incompatible with anhydrous metal chlorides, iron, strong acids, caustics, and peroxides, and reacts vigorously with oxidizing materials. When exposed to flame, propylene oxide will burn with a hot flame like isopropyl if not confined, but it may explode if confined. Polymerization may occur due to high temperatures or contamination with alkalis, aqueous acids, amines, and acidic alcohols.

Synonyms for propylene oxide are epoxypropane; 1,2-epoxypropane; methyl ethylene oxide; methyl oxirane; propene oxide; and 1,2-propylene oxide.

Derivatives of propylene oxide are polyether polyols; propylene glycol; di- and tripropylene glycol; poly (propylene glycol)s; surfactants; glycol ethers; and isopropanolamines"

Pete Barton did indeed sell the yellow car...it is now solid dark blue. Pete was helping out the new owner at the final B@B event in 2002. He is working with Tony 0cchipinti to build The Killer TSM ride.

BTW, the cobwebs were removed from TWEAKED 1 and it ran at BG this year with a newer, larger turbo. Went an 8.05 as I recall.

Duttweiler campaigns an oldsmobile bodied tube chassis race car with a small, small block chevy and twin turbos that easily runs in the 6's. Bill Anderson is king of the single turbo gn's, while I would put my money on sean lilly from canada for the twin turbo gn's. I think he has run a 7.50ish pass at 180.

It's a toss up between Sean and Alvin Iscaowitz(sp?) or as he is known "Big Al" of NY...

He has also run in the 7.50 range (might even be a little faster like 7.40's) with his Duttweiler twin turbo Stage2 powered flamed GN and from what John Wilde said he recently got his motor back from Duttweiler and will be looking to go faster....

Here is a pic and a vid of the car....

BTW, I thought I heard that Sean sold his car??
