Exclamation Shafted at the gas pump?

I was visiting 1320 the other day, and I was telling him how I managed to put 19.45 gallons into my 18 gallon GN gas tank (and there were 2-3 gallons remaining). Instead of the pump shutting off, it blew ~1/10 gallon of gas out the breather tube and not the neck. Anyhow, he told me about another friend of ours that had the same thing happen with his truck, and he called and complained to the manager and is working on compensation.
How many of you pay enough attention to the gas you put in your vehicles to know if we're getting screwed by the owners miscalibrating the pump?

I can say most people don't. How do I know this? I work at a gas station, sometimes at least. Only once has someone come in with a situation similar to yours. Actually, you wouldn't believe how many people pay no attention to the total at all. But I'll say what we told the one guy (in this case the guy was a moron, but that's a long story): we are checked regularly by the DOT and EPA. Sometimes I wonder myself though...

The bureau of weights and measures are supposed to regularly check pumps for accuracy, but....

I've never had a problem around here, but I've filled my bone-dry aux. tank on my motorhome several times, and it's always 27.0 to 27.1 gallons---but once in northern California, I mysteriously fit 29.4 gallons in it, and I was driving on that tank at the time!

I bitched, they just laughed...
