| After 3 years of hard work, All American Racing, LLC (Drag City) was given City approval to build a "professional" drag strip in Banning, California on August 14, 2001. It also marks an historical date in the sport of Drag Racing, by making this approval the first in over 30 years that has allowed a "NEW" Drag Strip Facility to be built in Southern California. The Banning City Council was first given a power point presentation by Drag City's Andrew Marocco concerning the history, planning and phasing of the actual track construction. This was followed by public hearings, where concerns and support were voiced. However, most of the concerns were dispelled when facts of the studies and expert opinions were presented to the public and the city council during the meeting. Many others wearing their Drag City T-Shirts, came from as far away as San Diego, Long Beach, and Santa Clarita, as well as local Banning citizens, who were present to show their support for the Drag Strip. With well organized plans, focused studies, city staff recommendations, a planning commission approval and overwhelming public support, the Banning City Council gave the project a green light with a unanimous vote of APPROVAL (4-0) in favor of the drag strip. What's the next step? The answer is one that we all have been dying to hear…….moving dirt. Andrew Marocco, President of Drag City said, " We are extremely happy and thankful that the Council approved this project. Banning has made us feel at home and we are proud to call Banning the home of Drag City. The racers should also know that we have had many supporters along the way, who have believed in our efforts through it all, we couldn't have done it with out them. Thank You! Finally, to the Community of Banning a very special thanks for welcoming us and the racers to your great city. Drag City's Vice President, Ron Marocco added," We also need to mention that we are pleased to be bringing the excitement of IHRA drag racing to the west coast, as well as weekly drag racing back to Southern California, where it all began more then 50 years ago." The Drag City Facility is planned as a "National Event" 1/4 mile track and will be built in three phases. It will have a seating capacity of 10,000, musco lighting, a dyno/media center, permanent restrooms and concessions, and a family picnic area. "Its extremely important that the public understands that this facility is being designed with the family in mind. After all many families come as race teams and spectators, so we need to make an environment that they want to be in.", said Marocco. The construction of the track is to begin in the Fall of 2001 and calls for the first phase to be completed by the end of Spring 2002, giving the public a place to race, while the next phases continue until 2003. Drag City's Andy Marocco says" Once completed the new track's economic impact to Banning and surrounding areas will be about $35 million dollars a year. Marocco said that a number of building and paving contractors are drag racers themselves. "That's the whole idea to get the racers involved and keep it grassroots oriented. If we can do that, and still keep a professional image and staff on board, we'll be able to accommodate everything from "street legal" cars all the way up to Top Fuel and keep everyone happy." Amazingly other racers are already in their garages building new door slammers and front engine dragsters, counting the days until the grand opening. What makes this track special from some recent temporary tracks that have opened around Southern California is that the Drag City facility is a PERMANENT one and it isn't just a dedicated "street legal" track. Rather, it's a "racer's track", were all racers and cars are welcomed. Although its true that almost 96% of the racers who will be attending will be driving street legal cars with mufflers, there will still be test & tune, sportsman and professional events at the track as well. Already the phones at Drag City's offices and their website have been flooded by fans, racers, sponsors, and the media, all asking the same question: When? For Southern California the answer can't come soon enough. "We are getting construction plans and bids finalized now and hope to break ground in the next several weeks. Then we will be on our way to seeing the first cars racing down the track this coming May. Building a track is the easy part. The hardest part was getting through the approval process, but we did it!" said Marocco.
