Honestly I would question the tech who pulled out the tranny. He probably never told the tranny tech that there was anything wrong or the tranny tech wasn't qualified. My point was for $300 maybe a re-seal and look through - obviously nothing else.

I've seen bench work go bad by the "best" tranny techs. Most is lack of information received and what the customer really wants. Having the car prior and post a rebuild is the best to ensure a quality job is completed. Most of us know that $300 doesn't go far but it can correct certain problems.

The mechanic did not take care of his customer. Now his customer is looking for answers. No one questioned the mechanic who pulled out the tranny while the motor was being built.

Sorry - just my 2 cents.

Sounds like everyone is questioning the $300 rebuild. I read it as this is how it acted BEFORE the rebuild/refresh, and the rebuild/resfresh did not correct it.

If the owner can't resolve it using the link provided by the other board memeber, then DEFINITELY take it to someone WHO KNOWS THE BRF TRANS.

Plan to spend more than $300.

I have a 87 GN garage queen basically stock low mile one owner with lots of chrome under the hood, Boyd Coddington wheels and a stock transmission. This hot operation upshift-downshift problem has been bothering me for years and this is the first place I have heard of the TCC solenoid problem. I have been instructed to : 1. Put in a good additive and not change the fluid.
2. Change the governor (hard part to find)
c. flush the system
4. After a well know transmission builder called a help line
I was told to replace the 1-2 shift valve. $500.00 later
problem still existed.
5. add a cooler
6. I was told that I was nuts that when I disconnected the
speedo the car ran better.
7. I read this post to change the TCC.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
I need to thank 77 cruiser! thanks dude. $50.00 fix!

A Raybestos banner rebuild kit has all you need to freshen up the 200 including seals gaskets and washers for a lil over 200 bucks.
But the direct clutches and OD clutches need to be Alto Reds or equiv in perf type frictions additionally to the ones in the kit for perf appl.
Also the banner kit does not come with Teflon sealing rings for the front center support, it has steel ones which most builders frown upon, it does not come with any thrust washers (plastic of babbit) if one is found bad.
Another must is a hardened stator support and either cryoed or billet drum if its going to be tore down.

So for 300 bucks built you did not get anything special as far as parts go
