**COMPLETELY HYPOTHETICAL CONTENT BELOW**

Say, hypothetically, that stuff at one's current job was "getting weird," and one was considering submitting one's CV to a company out in San Jose/Santa Cruz area in CA (suburbs thereof). Now, this person isn't getting canned, and could probably work at this job as long as he/she wanted, but might not be getting compensated fairly for the contribution he/she makes. Would it be worth uprooting and leaving security/comfort of home in X state for 30% more salary and a cooler job? FYI this area of CA a house similar to our subject's house is around $325k, competitive buyer's market.

What say you?

Well..In my case,I have made a few complete career changes...They didnt take me out of State,But they felt risky to me none the less.

Each time always worked out for the best,And I never regretted a decision that I made...Im glad to know that I will never have to wonder..."What if".

I think that everyone knows when it is time to move on..Being that the Question is even being asked,I think the person already knows the answer...For some reason,It is just better to hear it from other people also.

My advice would be to do some very careful analysis of the available state/local cost of living data (I believe both The Economist and WSJ publish some reasonable indicies every once in a while). One of my wife's cousins lives in San Jose and at first blush your housing estimate looks very low.

Knowing this person's field, I'd also be thinking first not about the short-term salary comparisons, but about the potential for more substantial **long-run** growth. They'd be paying high CA taxes and housing costs for quite a while and frankly I'd be skeptical that a 30% raise off of anything other than an insane salary base would make them whole. With that as a frame of reference I'd be making the comparison based on mid-to-longer-term compensation vs. happiness / growth and stability.

It's never easy, that's for sure, but choices are good!

I have a friend that did such said HYPOTHETICAL situation, from here to there. While my friend loves it out on the west coast he said for the extra money he got moving out there ( and funny you say 30% more said person would make because that is exactly what his income went up going out there) it pretty much evened him out because everything out there is so much more expansive then here. Eating out, fuel, taxes, etc, etc,. He said to me once I'm here and I love it but I think how rich I would be if I was back there on the east coast.

Now that being said and said persons job is getting "weird" it might be worth looking into. Said person should plan a trip out that area for a week and just do things said person would do here and see how the area is and how expensive things are. Personally I would go out there for such a visit if I were said person with the attitude of "I'm going to hate it here" so the overwhelming feeling of moving to a new and exciting place didn't get to me. Higher pay, but higher cost of living. I'd take into consideration where this person's friends and family are. Cooler job might be enticing but is it as a stable/reliable employer as the current one? Are there other similar job prospects in this part of CA should this new job not work out? Will the new employer offer any assistance with moving costs, etc.?

The area for life and work would be gilroy, about 45 mins south of San Jose. Cost of living in the metro area is retarded, but south is much cheaper. Believe, me, there exists a spreadsheet for everything!

The way the financials work out, it would be a cost of living increase as well as a large increase in comparative salary. The plan might be to move for 5 years until kids come along, then come back east.

That is something I would strongly take into consideration, if you are planning to have kids in the near feature I would strongly look into if the move is really worth it. Also think about how much farther away from your family you will be ( If they are close now...) I had a opportunity to move to Houston for a fire fighting job, I did not take the position because I would be to far from my family.... Job's come and go family does not.

Cost of living on the West Coast is generally more. (given) Otherwise everyone would move for more $$.

I'd have fun with the current job. If "he/she" can stay there as long as they want. Why not have some fun with it? Take the "weird" as a challenge. I know I do at my job.

Remember its just a job, career or whatever you want to call it. Unless its your own company we are all dispensable.

I agree with Banning, if you have a close family near by now.....that's a big one too overlook.

Its not always about the money. Maybe "he/she" could transfer to another department.

I totally agree with the proximity to family thing. If said person has a significant other, they need to be VERY sure that person is 100% on board with the idea. The adjustment will be way worse if they have to deal with a new job and living situation as well as "I miss my family, why did you do this to me". And don't just take their word for it, see how their and your family feels about it.
Been there, and it sucked, and mine was only a 45 min ride to visit!

If this person leaves their current job very respectfully-- tons of advance notice, sincere offer to mentor their replacement-- perhaps the option to re-join their current firm down the road (at a higher level) could be left open.

Some folks seem to do pretty well at using this strategy to climb the career ladder and a little courtesy in leaving goes a long way.
