| Cold Friday night at Etown ![]() Paul has put his stock turbo back on trying to see if he can break in to that exclusive 11sec stock turbo club. I'm also trying to get into that club, but I've got a couple more 1/10s to shave off. Hoping the alky will help. Paul's previous best with the stocker was a 12.2. My best a 12.41, but that was about a year and a half ago. Since then I've gone through a rear end, tranny, injectors, converter, and a bunch of other stuff. After bouncing around some, I've got the car dialed in to pretty consistent mid 12's now though. Well, I'm glad to say I had one of my better times at the track, didn't run my fastest time, but I did run my second fastest. Not bad for the first time at the track with alky. I also didn't have the best 60fts either. I didn't leave hard enough as I was afraid to spin the tires. My car seems to bog a little when I don't leave hard enough.. might be my converter combo...dunno. Paul can leave a lot softer, but he's got a bigger diameter converter and its a lot tighter. My best run was: 60' 1.78 1/8 7.902 mph 86.74 1/4 12.47 mph 105.18 My best mph was 106.2 after I took some fuel out. With a better 60ft and more tune, I'm sure I can get it down to 12.1 or so. But get this though..... after a some just ok runs last week, Paul is really getting his launch down with the stocker and getting the tune dialed in. Paul's best run on the stock turbo: 60' 1.57 1/8 7.50 mph 88 1/4 12.044 ![]() mph 108 So close, so close. I still have a chance to beet him to 11sec on the stocker, but its not looking good for me. He's really got that thing dialed in. He's leaving off the foot brake with almost no boost on 26" MT DR's. I'm using the same tires, but I need to leave at 6-7lbs. He was running 27lbs boost, me 25. Paul is locking his converter, but I'm not. Thats probably some of the difference right there. Pretty fun night for a couple guys just running the stock turbo. Few other guys there last night too....hopefully they'll chime in.

well i went back this morning to get some methanol and saw a couple Gns there so I ended up staying and making some runs first pass at 11:15 , 20psi in the MT radials with 26-27# in third gear , 1.60 , 4.810, 7.582, 88.23, 10.005 ,12.084 , 107.77 next pass was a 1.644 but still only a 12.178 @ 107.23 had some 12.4s with 1.8 60s , dialed in more fuel and trying to leave with some boost slipped the tires . tank was getting low after last nights runs which wasnt helping traction , then with only about 1/4 tank left it seemed like i ran out of fuel at the top looking at the O2s on DS . I probably ran the pump dry (o2s dropped to 690) . i went down to town to exxon and got some gas and for the last pass ,4.903 i pulled down the boost a bit to 22# , left timing the same (27*/ 22*) 1.644 again , 4.903, 7.708, 87.12, 10.157 , 12.250 @ 107.20 Oh well , it was fun trying to get that 11 second run on the stock turbo .

Ran three more runs today at Etown. Ran the cars best 1/8th and my best 60' on the first run. Almost ran my best time, but not quite. I lost the check ball on my RJC boost controller so I just ran the wastegate. Unfortunately I had boost creep, so the end of my runs tailed off as my boost got too high for the stock turbo and I got a little knock. At least I was consistent. 1st run: 60'....... 1.65 1/8...... 7.80 mph..... 85.69 1/4...... 12.44 mph..... 105.04 2nd run: 60'....... 1.68 1/8...... 7.82 mph..... 86.21 1/4...... 12.42 mph..... 104.35 3rd run: 60'....... 1.69 1/8...... 7.86 mph..... 85.95 1/4...... 12.47 mph..... 105.27 I consistently left at around 7lbs of boost. I didn't try more as I didn't want to ruin a run and in the past I usually spun with harder launches. Don't know what I'll try for next year suspension wise. I would like to get down into the low 1.6's or even 1.5s. Might be time for a new turbo though....... |

I was one of the other GNs at Englishtown on Saturday. I only made 2 runs out of the trophy marathon lanes. They were my first runs with the RJC boost controller. Couldn't figure the darn thing out. First pass I ran a 12.4@112 with 20psi boost. I wanted 25psi. Tightened the controller up for more boost, but only managed another 12.4@109 with 19psi . Go figure. I thought tightening the controller would raise boost. Sorry for not being more friendly with you other GN guys. My wife had her hands full with our newborn son being cranky and I had to get home. Actually I should have never gone in the first place. Should have been home all day helping. She was cool about it though.

I couldn't get much boost on the RJC controller until I started shortening the wastegate rod all the way. This was on a regular wastegate controller. On a high pressure wastegate controller, I was able to get about 23-24lbs boost. I think I need a stiffer spring inside the boost controller or else I need to stretch out the spring. When I took it apart thats when the check ball dropped and I couldn't find it. Anyway, here's a pic from Sunday at Etown. Had it made up at the photo shop there. They had proofs up not long after making a run. This was 1.65 60ft. |

The thing that I can't figure out is that I didn't change the tension on my wastegate actuator rod when I installed the RJC controller. With the bleed valve I was running in place of the solenoid and the factory "Y" hose routing, I could change my boost from 15psi (street) to 25psi (track) no problem by just opening the bleed valve. This tells me that the rod tension is sufficient to hold the puck over the wastegate hole at these boost levels. I slap the RJC controller on tuner style as Jason recommends and I can't get more than 20psi. I tighten the RJC controller and boost drops. Something doesn't compute. I think I'm going to try the RJC controller in line with the bleed valve and the factory "Y" and see what that does. Why can't anything with these cars be easy.

with the rjc on my 87 with the TA49 and HD WG controller set to 1/8" preload on the arm i was able to easily raise the boost to 28psi and had good control from about 22 to 28 just by tightening the RJC controller , and at first i had it hooked to the compressor inline with the stock setup , dont remember when i went tuner with it when i threw the stock turbo for some tries at an 11 second run with same HD WG I had problems getting over 23 in 1-2 and then in third i would get close to 25 , and started cranking the arm in , i suspect too much fuel was the problem but as i took fuel out it ran sower this time around with the stock turbo i removed the rjc ( murph is using it) to try to keep the tire spin under control and instead used the BSTC controller with dual solenoids teed in and the same HD WG actuator , on the TA49 and was easily able to adjust to 28psi , and still manage some decent 60' times and just as fast 1/4 times with the stocker i had to tighten the heck out of the HD arm just to get to 26 (had to make a hook to pull it on) and that was with the BSTC maxed out in both 1-2 and 3rd , i would get about 24-25 in 1-2 then third would hit 28 or so then creep back to just over 25 . again this was the same chip used on the 49 with fuel cutback about 7% and timing the same at 27/22 and i beleive fueling was the reason for the boost being so low with egt in the low 1500s but it seems to run better with it rich dispite the lower boost one thing about the rjc was when i had it on the 49 boost was rock steady with no creep or spiking
