when to change the timing chain ...

unless you have receipts from previous owner... do it as soon as you take ownership and not one day later!!

i will never put it off again

i managed to put 2000 miles on my car since ive owned and first thing i bought was a timing chain and the odds and ends to do it (truroller timing chain , new waterpump, timing cover gasketset, oilpan gasket) but hadnt gotten around to doing it ,
my trans is back in and saturday I met with murphster to comparing rides and talk cars and got to spin some tires
got to try out my strip chip and car seems to work ok, with racing season over its time for my next step up in power
I decided I'd finally tackle the timing chain and j picked up the last peice i needed (roller cam thrust button) last night .and i will do some upgrades while I'm at it (turbo, poly mount, dutt neck)
after tearing it down i discovered it was the OE in there with 128K mi . 3 teeth missing (not in same area) and cracks everywhere i cant beleive anyone recommends going with an OE nylon cam gear ,
good news is the tensior wasnt torn up (no debris in the oil) and the old plastic thrust button didnt wear down so my timing cover is fine but my oil slinger plate is cracked and the woodruff key at the crank looks like its an offset key on one side so its back to the parts store.

Good catch. Glad you found out sooner, other than later. A friend of mine smoked his motor because of a bad stock chain. Pieces came off of it, clogged his oil pickup, and he lost oil pressure. Goodbye bottom end.

i planned on yanking the pan , .I expected to find the pickup full of timing gear and tensioner shreds so when i got the roller button i also ordered a pickup tube and screen (6. 99 at advance) and plan on doing the rear main seal as well
I just did the driverside poly mount while everything was out of my way and it went in much easier then the stock replacements from kirban , I used some blocks on the firewall and rad support a 4 foot bar stradling them and my now obsolete torque strap which was still attached to the alternator to lift the engine up . thats was the last time i will have to use that strap

I have the gear, but have been waiting to do it for a winter project. I know it needs it, but haven't wanted to put the car down. I intend to do it when I replace the rear main seal and swap the cam. I just want to pull everything off together and only take the front cover and pan off once.

Later,

Steve.

p.s. I am scared to see what gear in my car looks like.

I've beat on my car enough for now. It's time for me to do the timing chain as well. I went 12.95 on the original, and wont be racing untill its replaced. I figure I'll do a new timing cover and roller cam button while I'm at it. Maybe a new oil pan gasket and rear main seal. I'll figure it out as time goes on.

I think mine needs the replacment cam button. I can only assume the spring may be weak, and could be my engine tap noise on deceleration. Really nothing else it could be at this point.

I think I'm working with my stock one as well. Bought with 105k and I think it has 109k now. It's on my list of things to di but since I never drive it I don't have too much to worry about, eh?

My NA Regal did that. Went to the local WAWA, ran in and ran out, and the car wouldn't start (probably the ONLY time it ever didn't start). Stock timing chain skipped a couple teeth, it had around 145,000 miles on it. Most of the teeth on the gear were gone.

We did the timing chain but never dropped the pan to clean it out. At about 180,000 miles, enough miniscule garbage got sucked up into the oil pump that it clogged the bypass valve while I was out to lunch at work. Ran for 11 minutes without oil pressure. After cleaning it out, it lasted another 2000 miles (with rod knock) before it finally seized.
