Wow, Mikey your alive! They will probably make you pay for a $50 search, to make sure you own the car because you haven't had it insured in a while, then they will hit you with the immobilizer and everything else.

What in the world is an immobilizer and what's up with car theft in your area? Once they are mandatory and everyone has them wouldn't it be very easy to defeat it since all cars have the same antitheft, ie. the theives know exactly what to expect.

It's an anti-theft device that cuts three circuits, pump, ecm, and ignition. Apparently, they can vary in the way they are wired up. Your key has a tag on it and without the tag the car won't start. If they are looking for a specific car, they will steal it regardless. This is more of an attempt to stop the joy riders.

We are the car theft capitol of Canada

Since the law makers and the police won't do anything about the 12 year old kids stealing all the vehicles the insurance company was forced to step in and mandate everyone with a vehicle on the "most at risk" list to force them to install an immobilizer in their vehicle. And yes the 84-87 Grand National is on the list. On the plus side if your vehicle is on the list Manitoba Public Insurance will pay for the installation of the immobilizer.

It's a small unit that mounts in an obscure place under the dash with a small fob that goes with you keys, the unit must see that transponder to allow the vehicle to start. the immobilizer has 3 internal relays that interrupt 3 circuits on the vehicle... it's at the installers descretion which 3 circuits to interrupt.

The immobilizer wires are all black and marked to installation only, and the immobilizers are not all wired the same to avoid someone figuring which wire to fiddle with.
