86 gn - t type

Not sure i'm posting in the right place but i have a so called tech question. I am looking at purchasing a 86 GN for my daughter. The car is mint but I did a car fax and it says t-type. It looks like a gn has all the badges and interior like a gn. I was wondering if it is a t-type the has been made to appear as a gn or what? need to know before i put down a lot of money. Thanks

Look in the trunk on the deck lid if the RPO lable is their it should have the code WE2 signifing that it has the GN package and it would be a true GN or run the vin if the original window sticker is available it also will have the code WE2 on it mine does have it at the top of the window sticker mine says t-type but further down it has the code WE2

You said to run the vin. I did on carfax and it does not show any options just that it is a turbo regal. Do I need to run it at the dealership or what? Thanks,

there is nothing in the vin to differentiate between a GN and a turbo option....carfax does not know the difference.

CarFax aint worth the paper it's printed on. As far as your car goes the GN was an option on the T-Type in 1986. There were three Regal models for 1986.
Regal
Regal Limited
Regal T-Type
You had to order the T-Type than add the GN option code WE2 to get a GN. That is why CarFax is telling you it is a T-Type. The only way to verify what you are looking at is to run the numbers. First the VIN is going to tell you it has the turbo motor. The eighth character of the VIN will be the number 7 for the LC2 Intercooled Turbo. Than back in the trunk stuck to the underside of the trunk lid is what is called the SPID label. Service Parts Indentifacation. It will have a ton of RPO(RegularProductionOption) codes on it. Look for these two codes. W11=T-Type and WE2=Grand National. Now a lot of cars don't have the SPID label on them anymore. Sometimes the car was in an accident and the trunk lid was replaced and most of the times the car was stolen and the perps peeled the label off as it has a VIN printed on it. If that is the case all is not a lost cause. On the firewall on the left side is the Cowl Tag. It doesn't have the VIN stamped on it but it does have the trim codes on it. The GN has a specific set of trim codes that are not shared with any other model of Regal or T-Type. Some of these codes will be
AR9=Bucket Seat
82C=GN Black&Gray Interior
19L=Black Exterior Paint
W11=T-Type
It has to have at least these four codes to be a legit GrandNational.

If there is no SPID label AND Cowl Tag than run away. It's probably a retagged or reVIN'd car and worthless and nothing but trouble.

The above is an example only for the 1986 model of cars. The same principal applies to the 1987 cars but some of the codes will be different.

Hopefully this is a 2nd car that will sit in the garage and is not taken to the store/mall/movies etc. These cars are stolen in a heartbeat. Put a corvette, ferarri, viper, and a GN beside each other in the mall parking lot, come out 10 minutes later, and the GN will be the one that gets stolen.

I'd venture to say that if you figured that # of GNs that are on the road devided by the number that get stolen every year, the GNs would have the highest ratio of stolen cars per # on the road.

Here are some scans of a few cowl tags. The first one is from a 1985 T-Type which is the same as the 1986 and the second is from my 86 GN. I don't have one from an 87 but they are the same except for the W11 code. The third is from a 86 NA Regal. Notice the lack of the W11. Some other info that is usually on the cowl tag are the roof codes and if it is a two tone car. Since my 3 examples are mono tones with no roof options those codes are deleted. If the car has T-tops you would see a CC1 stamped somewhere. CF5 for astroroof and CO4/CB4 for vinyl top. You would see D84 if it was two-tone and D86 if it was a WH1 Designers series.

Yep sure did. It's a 79 ElCamino Super Sport. Black laquer paint with a Dark Red bottom. Red bench seat interior. Built in Atlanta. I think the last year they used that style of cowl tag was 1980.

BTW the Doraville assembly line where this mighty G-Body was built will be shutting it's doors sometime in the early part of this September. It had been kicking out the Uplander and other mini vans for the last 10 years or so. Before them they were screwing together the W-Body Cutlass and Regal and before them it was the G-Body. Another part of the G-Body legacy lost to history and our current economical hardship. I'll have to dig through my archives. I think the Ontario assembly line were Beachbum slacks off at is the only plant that remains. As far as those where the G-Body was built. Not unless you want to count the Ramos Arizpe Mexico line where all the 84-87 ElCaminos were built.
