Best Method for Removing Gas from Tank

I need to empty my gas tank without driving it empty as I'm in the process of replacing a defective Walboro fuel pump. The pump appears to run for about 15 minutes now before getting hot and stopping. Can anyone suggest the best way to empty the gas from the tank either through relay hookup to energize the pump for that 15 minute window, or would the old fashioned way of siphoning need to be done? Please be specific as to the relay location and hookup if this is the best method. Thanks for your help.

Remove the Schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail. Clamp a long 4-5 foot hose on it and place the other end in a container or another car's fuel tank. Behind the alternator you will find an electrical connector which will activate the fuel pump. Run a wire from the battery to the connector.

Actually there are two unconnected leads behind the alternator: the green one is the tach lead and the black is the fuel pump prime lead.

Thanks. The black one energizes the pump.

Had to do that myself today. Except the low tech way of picking up the tank and pouring it out.

Thought about using the fuel rail but we couldn't get it to work. Now I know.

I use the AC hose off an old R12 manifold and test gauge tool. It's the yellow hose assuming they are color coded. One end has a valve that screws onto the fuel rail so you dont have to remove the Schrader valve. Just apply 12V to the brown connector. I also made myself a fuel pressure gauge by using a VDO 100PSI gauge and the correct brass fitting from the hardware store. It just screws into the hose so that old hose serves two functions when I need it.

I use a old Delco AC-12 inline fuel pump I made into a siphon pump. I Added a few lengths of fuel line on both sides and a cigarette lighter plug with a 12ft lead. I had it for years. I also use it to drain the trans and power steering pump. If you have old nasty gas, I wouldn't use the in-tank pump to draw all that trash in the system.

Here are some pics of my parts. The hose can be had at Horrible Freight. The fuel gauge is from Summitt/Jegs and the fitting is from Ace Hardware.

He asked for the best way to drain his tank, not the way a 7th grader would do it.
