Exhaust Manifold Gasket trouble

I just wanted to pass along a exhaust manifold gasket problem that I was having. I lost my drivers side gasket shortly after my head swap last fall. Turns out that the gasket was slightly (1/8") smaller then the exhaust ports, all along the bottom 3 ports, well my port and polish was a little to aggressive in this area. Anyway the exhaust would burn the paper backing in this area, then blow out the side or bottom of the gasket. So on the last tear down (yea took me a couple of times) I took a tin snips and trimmed the new gasket in these areas, been driving it for about a month now with the exhaust staying quiet.
Hope this tip helps someone else,

Chuck

Were your heads ported, and which gaskets did you use?

What he said. The felpros I used had a huge opening and did not even come close to blocking the flow.

I think you have the wrong gasket. It looks different than mine which is blue fiber. Mine are FelPro 1400. Batteries are dead on my camera, but I just held one up to an extra manifold that I have and they fit perfectly around the ports.

Holy Snikees

A little too agressive with the porting....

Who ever is thinking about home porting here is a quick couple of search keywords.

PORT MATCH

No offence intended to the original poster, its a very unfortunate situation.

No Fear,
The exhaust header matches the heads, yea, they are aggressive too. I was able to not run a exhaust manifold gasket on the passenger side, but for some reason even after getting the exhaust manifold flat on the driver's side it would not seal with out a gasket.

Thanks Chris,

Appreciate the link. I'll switch it out when I put the fresh motor in.

Those are the wrong gaskets. They are sure to blow out. Never use them on a turbo engine as the exhaust temps will blow them out, nothing to do with porting or them hanging in the exhaust flow. It will happen again. You need to buy the Felpro 1400 exhaust gaskets. They are blue, reusable and will not blow out. They also cost $20, not $6.
