If you're looking to convert to a Rear Disc setup, GET IN HERE!

Hey everyone.
As some of you know I went off the deep end with my GN and now I'm into the brake system. I have been searching HIGH and LOW for a good solution for rear disk brakes, and I have finally decided on running a set of 2007 Corvette Z06 brakes all around. They're 14" rotors and 6 piston PBR calipers in front and 4 piston PBR calipers and 13.4" rotors in the rear. This setup uses 20 seperate brake pads (one for each piston) and should have some SERIOUS stopping power! Anyways, I digress

The problem I ran into is for the rear brakes. Since our 8.5" GM 10 bolt rearend is kind of a unique piece compared to the 7.5, there are really no companies that make a rear caliper bracket that's plug and play without serious axle housing modification. There are plenty of kits out there for the corporate 7.5 or normal 8.5" rearend, but that would require us to hack up our axle tube flanges and is a huge PITA. Noone I can find makes a bracket setup that is plug and play for using any of the LS1 F body or C5/C6 brake components. I have seen some that use a small 10 or 11" rotor and a Lincoln caliper, or even an old 1-piston Caddy Eldorado caliper, but lets face it, they can't hold enough boost to warrant the effort installing them.

So after some research, i found a company called KORE3 Industries that makes some really slick adapters to use the C5/C6 brake components on a lot of different applications, but of course they don't have one for ours. I gave Tobin a call at KORE3 and he is willing to make a specialized bracket JUST for the 8.5" GM 10 bolt!!! I was excited to hear this for obvious reasons, but like any other small proprietor, Tobin has other priorities in front of making this bracket kit, and told me it would be a few months before he got around to it. After a good conversation with Tobin about the need and potential demand for his product, he told me he would be willing to move our kit up on his to-do list if we could show him enough interest to make it a priority to him.

So here's what we need to do:
Email Tobin at info@kore3.com and tell him you're interested in the Rear caliper bracket kit for the Grand National, and he will add you to his email list for upcoming developments. If we can get enough interested parties on board, he will make this kit a priority, which in my opinion is LONG overdue for us!! By the way, here is a similar kit he did for the corporate 10/12 bolt rears: KORE3 Industries LLC: On and Off-Road Performance Automotive Components

Any feedback, lemme know, otherwise everyone bombard Tobin's email with requests to get the ball rollin' on this puppy!!!!

Whats the minimum size wheel you will need if you have 14" rotors? I suspect that's going to be a deal breaker for most people unless they are using 17" or 18" wheels. Then you'll have huge brakes in the rear with dinky stock rotors in the front. Sounds like things are going to get expensive.

Converting to rear disks isn't as complicated as you might think. I've seen plenty of GN's with discs out back. 80's Camaro bolt up to our backing plate but I don't know the details on the swap. I want disc brakes in the rear on my GN so that is a project on the horizon. There is also another company that escapes me at the moment, something like Varga, that makes simple brackets much like the LS1 brackets for the front. I can get some pictures of this setup if you are interested as there is a car right now down at KDK Performance with the rear discs installed, with operational emergency brakes.

Yea, you need some big wheels. I went with a 18" Simmons 3 piece wheel and thats a close fit with the monster rotors. Actually the set of 4 rotors, calipers, and pads is relatively inexpensive right from GM. They can be had for $1700-1800 for all 4 with a good discount. I'd love to see the adapters you're talking about.

Thanks!

Why not just call Baer or Jack Cotton who sells Baer's stuff. They have a full 4 whell disc setup that bolts right up. On the rear just remove the backing plates and add their brackets VERY EASY and lots of stopping power. Ask me how I know

Stuie,
I actually just sold my Baer setup. I had the track+ system and didn't like it. Just a personal preference. And I'm not gonna lie, I like the bling factor of these monster Z06 calipers behind the wheels... they're insane!

Gino, Aerospace brakes has a rear 4 piston kit for us that runs on a two piece aluminum 11 3/4 rotor for around $650. IMO, don't go crazy trying to fit something that will only cause mad amounts of time suckage, limited gains and more $$.

Give them a call 727 347 9915

Yea I took a look at the aerospace stuff awhile ago. It struck me a more of a drag race setup, and I am looking for more of a road race setup that can stand up to some consistent heavy punishment. The aerospace stuff looks nice, but once again I would just question it on a road course.

I am pretty sure their rear rotor is the street rotor and not the drag rotor set up. I am going to do a full Aerospace set up on my Talon later this year and the 4 piston/two piece 11 3/4 street rotor is the kit I am going with.

The Vette stuff is no doubt killer but it's Vette $tuff, ca$h ca$h ca$h.

Hell, see if someone will retro fit the Evo Brembo Calipers for us, those go for $400 a full set.

I did the SSB (stainless steel brake corp) conversion 10 years ago. It was easy and cheap. I can stop on a dime and drag race too. I also was able to keep my stock T rims. I'm sure there's better out now that will keep your car stock appearing and not look like a bling bling parking lot ricer

I agree! I dont see many takers for that amount of $$$ & also getting that added "bling" look is not a positive selling point to many owners I know.
If it is for you then good luck with it! I just wouldnt count on many jumping in on the deal. At least not most of the owners I know.

To each their own I guess. You're right that it's not for everyone, and definitely not for the low budget racer. I'm building a pro-touring GN to be different than everyone else, and I love the looks of the massive new Z06 brakes behind a nice 19" 3-piece wheel with some sticky rubber... Definitely not the typical GN look with satin 15" auto drags...

UPDATE!! I just heard from Tobin on this, here's his email response:

Gino,

Thanks for checking in. We've got the prototypes for the race kit at
plating right now and have them scheduled for fitment and testing over the
next couple of weeks. We ran into a few snags with the parking brake design
and are awaiting the results from the race kit before we proceed with the
parking brake kit design.

Regards,
Tobin
