Looking at a Turbo Regal.

This is my first post.

Im looking to buy a turbo Regal or a Grand National. Doesnt matter to me, ...I just want a clean car, and 400+ hp.

I found one local and looked at it today. Its a 87 Regal. The seller says it has a rebuilt engine with 6k miles on it. Has an aftermarket cam, 50# injectors, te 44 turbo, ect... He's asking $11K.

The car looks okay overall. They didnt do the best paintjob, but its in good shape. Interior is decent (orginal). I dont know much about these cars, so I dont know what Im looking at.

The car seems a little laggy. I didnt understand his reason for why...... Also, has a rear main leak. It couldnt have been sitting in the spot that it was in for long, ...and had a two inch oil puddle growing under it. He said they ALL leak. Is this really the case??

If their is someone in your area that knows these cars well...take them with you. The guys on the board here are top notch...I'm sure one in your area would go with you. Where are you located? Congrats on deciding to get into the Buick world.

I dont know anyone to go with me. Im already aware of the condition of the car. The body work is not the best. The inside could use some carpet, and maybe some fresh upolstry. The top of the dash is cracked. And, It needs new rubber window trim/door seals.

I just want to know should the rear main seal be leaking that much? And what else should I be looking at?

Should I expect a perfect car, for that kind of money?

They are prone to leak but can be fixed.
Location means alot. Up north they are higher than down south.
Seems high to me.

"They all leak"

He is full of chit. Sounds like he filled your ears with used-car salesmanship. That doesn't mean the car isn't worth the asking price or rather the final negotiation. Where are you located?

Now that you have given more information about the car...for $11,000 I would recommend walking away. This is just my opinion. Buy a car that is already in top notch condition and is "turn key". It is much cheaper to drive away in a finished car than sink thousands more into a fixer-upper. Just my 2 cents.

I sold my '86 T-type last year for $8000.
The car was very clean, and capable of a low-11sec time.

For $11,000 you should be able to find a nearly perfect car.
I'd keep looking if I were you...

The people that think the rear mains are supposed to leak are the ones that know little about these cars. The rear mains are pretty easy to seal up with the right technique and sealant. If the leak is that bad and the owner thinks it's normal he probably knows little about the car which probably means there are other issues that he also doesn't know about.

Cars are only worth what someone wants to pay. I really don't think that GN's are worth more up North than down South. I do think that buying a GN or TTA from down South has it advantages depending on how long the car has been down South and not up North on the salty highways. Trust me, keep looking and the right car you will find. I kept looking for 2 months and found mine 700 miles away, but it was well worth it. Also, when looking at a car to buy I would crawl all over it very carefully to seek any hidden damage it might have. Not to knock T-Tops, but at some time they leak.

I know that car. You won't find a nicer one. While leaking from the RMS is common its not right to say they ALL leak.

If I cant find a nicer one, ....then I dont want a Buick. For $11K I expect a real nice paint and interior, and something that doesnt leak all over my driveway.
