You need what they call the transmission. New ones are discontinued. And used ones are hard to come by. After about 10-15 years the plastic cracks on them like yours or the solenoid inside craps out. If I was you I'd try to find the complete assembly from an 87 with the three seperate motors. G-body units can be hard to find but you can use one from a B-C-D body in a jamb. The only difference is that the full size cars sit a little lower on the floor. Make sure you use the correct wire harness and switch with the newer style.

Ya, I work in the parts dept for a large Chevrolet dealer. Been doing it for almost 28 years and have been into the G-body since they redesigned them in 1978. Probally nothing I haven't done to these cars. Any questions fell free to post a thread.

Howdy Folks,
I'm the guy that made the "NEW Power seat transmission case".
Fisher body used nylon to make the original. 20 + years later plastics have come a long, long way. I use "partially aromatic poly-amides with 50% fiberglass fill. They are "bullet proof". Really strong. I also re-engineered it quite a bit, just to be sure. I believe it will be around long after we are gone.
For these cars, It lists at 395.00. 8 years ago when it went obsolete it was 366.00. Heres the trade off. My replacement can be installed with a 9/32 nut driver and socket wrench in as little as 10 or 15 minuets. If the seat is forward and down it takes a bit longer. Be patient.
Otherwise, you can try to convert to the newer 3 motor requiring a new switch, wiring, questionable mounting and possible trips back to the bone yard.
Spend your time fixing your car or driving it, It's up to you.
My cases are lifetime guaranteed and I sell them completely rebuilt / exchange. 30 day no question refund and 1 year on internal parts.
I also have couplers available.

Thanks and Happy New Year to All,
GM Seat Guy

Stupid question? Can I buy the housing and install/transfer my parts myself and if so what is the price of it?

"gmaltese", If I were you, I'd call Brian at GBodyParts.com Online. He sells new power seats transmissions and they're a direct replacement for your '86 track. just remove your damaged transmission and golt the new one in it's place and that's it!...nothing else to do...It's true that '86 and '87 tracks are different. The '86 like you have has one motor mated to a plastic transmission and steel tracks and the '87's have three separate motors and some aluminium tracks. Whole tracks will fit in either car year, but parts from either tracks are not interchangeable.

Upgrading Power Seat Motors

Here's a thread on how I avoided this problem altogether. If I had my druthers I would upgrade with the complete 3 motor 87 seat track. My conversion makes more sense than rebuilding the plastic motor units. Less plastic to break in the future anyway. Those gears and the coupler aint metal.$100 core charge? Heck I buy complete assemblies down at U-Pull-It for $20. Even less when they have a sale.

BTW when your plastic motor track breaks it's a lot easier to fix it when you pull the seat out of the car. How do you do that when the damn thing is busted, you say? The center gearnut is the foward-backward unit. It has the long cables going into it. Just remove the cables and stick a small slotted screw driver into the gearnut and turn it by hand. It's tedious but at least you can move the seat away from the mounting studs to pull the seat out. I made my own quicky tool by using the small blade from one of those 10 in 1 universal tools. I chucked the blade into my cordless drill. All I have to do is push the blade into the gearnut and push a button.
