Intake pipe fitment

While Steve Wood rails about Walmart, I have a real world problem. I currently have (had) a very nice 3" intake pipe from Buickgn. Much to my surprise, the bolt on the tensioner has scratched the hell out of it. This weekend I hope to be installing a 3.5" pipe with the LS1. How do you make the pipe fit without damaging it on that damn bolt?

doh, no wonder I rail about things like Wally World

Adjust the fit so it is not against the bolt before you tighten the clamps

Steve, Steve, Steve. If only it were that easy. When I connect up with my present oem maf and my turbo, there is no wiggle room. And that's with a 3". I presume the 3.5" will be even worse. It is right up against the damn bolt, or maybe an 1/8" away at best. I know Kirbans even sells a little nipple that goes on the bolt. What size are your intake pipes and how far are they from the bolt? Maybe it's the Tinman.

maf pipe

Chris, I just cut an old rad hose up and made a 4x4 square and used tie wraps to hold it in place between stud and pipe. Mine is a 4" pipe with LS1 maf, hope this may help. Glad to see your finally enjoying your car,Phil.

Just move the pipe around in the connectors, should fit with no problem! Also if you have excessive threads protruding from the offending nut you can trim those off as well to gain even more clearance. BTW, I have almost 1/2" clearance running my 3.5" pipe. Like Steve said, just adjust the pipe before tightening the clamps all the way.

One more thing, did you put the connectors on like I marked them for you??

I did just what TrooperT did, I cut a small piece of rubber hose and zip tied it in place over that bolt head, I know the mass air pipe is close to that bolt.
