Check out my stock turbo shaft play!

Got my GT6152 turbo in the mail and (with the help of Paul, pacecarta) removed the stock turbo and put on the new turbo yesterday. First thing we noticed with the old stock turbo was the huge in and out shaft play on the turbo. It was between 3 and 4 mm! There was very little side to side play though. Paul took the turbo apart to see what the fins looked like. There was so much play that the fins rubbed against the housing and ate away the housing too.

Here are some pics and a movie of the turbo. I ran 3 straight 12.4s last time at the track with this turbo in November! Good god, think what I would have been running with a good stock turbo. No wonder it didn't spool well with the tight converter.

Here's a movie .

Scary thing is the metal from the compressor wheel eventually went out the tailpipes. Only hope for that turbo is converting it to something bigger by boring out the housing and using a larger wheel.

I don't want to be rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, but the blades in my garbage disposal don't look that bad.
J/K, but those blades do look bad.

Shaft play.

I know your pain. I was testing my car & it detonate (sp?) & I heard a "ting ta ting ting" I was only a block from my house "Thank goodness" so I drove home to discover the nut had spun off the inpeller & was hitting on the MAF & the impeller. I looked a little closer to see my Turbo looked the same.

Time for an engine rebiuld as well my friend. There is no way I would live with all of that in my motor.

Good luck that sucks. Sorry.
