TA49 upgrade

TA49 upgrade

I am considering upgrading form a stock to a ta49 turbo. Where & who do I buy from. Are adjustable wastegate actuators still available? A while back there was some discussion going on regarding of some vendors selling the ta49 with a different housing that needed a convertor upgrade. I am not planning on upgrading the convertor at this time? Any and all info appreciated.
Currently my set-up is Walbro & hotwire, THDP & hi po cat, Hooker cat back & aerochambers, & stock injectors. Afpr & 91 octane street chip going in tomorrow & will eventually see a Thunder Fab stk loc intercooler.

I got a good deal from Mike Licht at www.fullthrottlespeed.com

Great turbo for the street, though it won't be long until you'll want to upgrade. You will notice a significant improvement especially once you get above 20psi. Unless you're reallly wanting stock appearing, I'd get a TE-44 or just get a larger one since that's where everyone ends up anyways. You may be able to find one for sale with low miles on it from someone who want's to upgrade.

I would give John Craig a call at Limited. I think most new turbos will come with the PTE housing these days as the garret exhaust housings are pretty much used up.

Okay, so is that good or bad at street level performance?

Kirban offers 2 versions of the TA49 turbo, one which uses the precision turbo exhaust housing which creates slightly more turbo lag but flows more cfm for more mid-top end power, the other version TA49 turbo he offers is made using the stock garrett exhaust housing which would spool faster than the Precision exhaust housing.

I am still open on that one. I will probably finish off my suspension first. Bilsteins going on and chip going in today, springs and sways next probably, & then Del-A-Lums up & down on the front, and I have not amde a choice on the rear upper & lower control arms yet, and that will determine what bushings go in the rear. I really want to do at least the missing and maybe all of the upper & lower body cushions GNX ones too. My mouths always bigger than my billfold so we'll have to see. Got bored, I guess.

Aha, I only wish that was true now. According to his current on-line catalog, he only selly one TA49, and he states in the opening paragraph that it is made by Precision Turbo & Eng, but then in the third paragraph, he states that this turbo is built by limited. WTF. $ 739, and due to the way it is written, it is hard to determine if a core is required. $ 75.00 Line of Credit for core. So now:
$ 739, or $ 739 + core, or $ 739 + $ 75 for no core sent in??
Is this a PT & E , or is this a Limit engineering?
Does this have the bigger housing that I rthink that I don't want?

I bought a TA 49 from Limit a couple months ago and it came w/PTE housing.Call and ask, maybe if you send them a Garrett housing they will build your turbo w/ the Garrett housing.FWIW there isn't a whole lot of difference in spoolup with one or the other.

it comes with the pte housing which is the way to go....supposed to spool better altho some say slightly slower initially....but, it definitely comes on better at top end.

I wish to heck that people would learn that the stock converter is fine with these small turbos if the car is tuned right. Geez, Louise, Look at Grumpy running a stock converter in his daughter's car with a PTE51 which is a definite step up in size and running lower 11s this week.

Oh, hell, I give up. Buy a GT3255 and go slower on the top end but you can damn sure impress all the kids down at the Sonic with your burnouts.

Good luck on find a Garrett housing from a reputable builder.

I agree with you, I just changed my stock turbo to a TA49 about 2 months now, I'm running the Ta49 with the Pte exhaust housing with the stock converter, like everybody said above a little bit more lag down low but pulls alot stronger in the top end. If you want the garrett housing give Kirban a call and see if he has any stock cores which he sends out and has that version of the TA49 made.
