| nick in crank journal? Opinions? I'll be back with some measurements; I just briefly looked at the crank a few days ago, but it seems like it is about .375" long, in line with the direction of spin, and maybe .032 wide, and not too deep. The way the oil hole is chamfered, it seems that the journal can tolerate some amount of recessed area??? I had a machine shop get a new Eagle crank and pistons for my engine + balance with BHJ and JW parts. After getting the stuff home I began to check the clearances. Noticed that the crank was hit very hard on the edge near a rod journal (outside of the # 1 rod journal facing the snout of the crank). The lip was pushed in deep enough that there was no way a rod would fit. Also noticed on the other end of the crank a nasty nick and burr on the crank where the side of the rod meets the side of the crank (near the rolled filet) and there was a mark on the journal too. The mark was not to bad, it was just evident that when it fell - or what ever happened to it - it smacked the journal too but did not appear to move or change anything there, but it sure caught the corner of something along the way. In fact the nick looks a bit like somebody tried to install a rod and smacked the hell out of the rod onto the crank. I say this because the deepest part of the nick had a very square end that looked like it might conform to the end-corner of a connecting rod. Now I'm wondering it the good deal on a new crank was truly a brand new crank. |

A small nick will not kill you depending on direction it is in and if you can't catch a fingernail on it when going over it you will probably be fine.
