How much would it cost to run in the 8's

How much money would it cost to run in the 8's. I downloaded a video the other day of cal hartlines car at the drag strip. Ran something like 8.7 at 157 mph. That car sees some time on the street. I am talking motor, turbo, electronics, wheels, tires, suspension and not cutting corners.

sees time on the street?

You reckon he drives it down to Mickey D's or simply backs it out of the drive to put it on the trailer?

Not counting the chrome you are looking for I would guess 70K into your car. I'm sure Bill Anderson or Jack Cotton will chime in.

I'm sure it does not see much street action, but I did see Cal's car beating the streets in BG in 2002.

The wife was trying to pick a race w/ him. Must have been the free beer from Toot's that night.

How much would you spend on a car that could actually go thru the mickey D's drive thru? 10's, low 9's?? Just curious here. I do not plan on it anytime soom. Only took in 13 years to change my stock injectors.

I have been thinking about adding a solid roof T-type to the stable and have a project for the kid and i to mess with.

The costs for going 8s vary depending on how much work you do yourself and your timeline. I would say that Steve's $70k figure is not unreasonable if you drop the car off and pay somebody to gut it, do the motor, trans, rear, fuel system, electronics, IC & plumbing, cage & safety gear...

People have done it a lot cheaper..and cut a lot of corners. I have seen several 8 second cars at the Nats without adequate safety gear, stock rear ends, Powermaster brakes (how'd you like to blow a fuse in that sucker at 150 mph?).

It's always cheaper to buy somebody else's finished car. I have seen some 8 second capable cars up for sale in the high $20k range. I am building a fairly serious car and I don't have much money in it, but I have done everything myself, I'm ridiculously slow to finish it, and there's no guarantee I won't blow it up before it runs a #.

Of course, even if you pay somebody $70k, you can still blow it up.

Edit: Cal was driving his car to work as late as last year. Of course, he only lives a couple of miles from work and I am pretty sure the car stayed on race gas..still cool. He brought it out to the Autozone at BG either last year or the year before. Since the parachute was still on, nobody was having any.

Kendall I said $70K;) I agree I was talking about having most of the work done for you. Artie Paltz (9.50's) does drive his in the street and to the track. But he bought a ready made car but had to do it all over the next year. So add it up and and it come close to my quoted figure. Lot of breakage at those speeds.

Cool

Should be able to buy one ready or almost done for $30K or so.

Might only get you low 9's, 8's takes a bit of tuning and work. ;)

Skip the 8's go for the 5's for only $42.500.00 This will keep the french fries crispy in the McDonalds parking lot.

I THINK AROUND $50,000 IS A PRETTY GOOD NUMBER to build it from scatch. We have recently finished just such a car for a customer which we then purchased. I'm finishing a few things, then plan on selling it for around 34,000 - 35,000. Of course that dpends on whether my girlfriend will let it go, it belongs to her now...... My car runs 8.90's and this car is much nastier than mine. This car was built to be capable of 8.50 passes, 8.70-90,s should be an easy pass. Of course we all know that turning is everything............
