Post Rich on startup, gas smell

I am in the process of building my GN. I've done all Spring Cleaning and tuning with an Auto X-Ray until I get my Scanmaster. When I first go to start up my car, it seems to crank for longer than it should. When it does start, it smells of gas pretty bad. Driving at WOT it can smell pretty bad too. O2s are at low 900's to high 900's. I have used three chips (stock, Thrasher and RA) and all of them do this. I have my FP set at 43-45 line off. Stock injectors, but my FP gauge shows that they hold pressure after I shut the car down. It will hold at 40psi (line on) for 25-30 min after I shut off the car and very slowly decreases from there. The gas smell isn't horrible, but I feel like I've gone back in time and I'm driving my old GTO with 3 dueces. I've checked to make sure that my FP gauge isn't leaking the fuel (screwed into my Schrader valve). Any ideas? I've heard a cracked DS header may do it. How hard is it to get off the DS header? Sometimes it's like the car almost backfires during cranking while starting up (happened 2-3 times in the past month or so). Thanks!

Justin

Sounds like leaky injectors! How old are your injectors? It is usually a common problem with the stock injectors.

Stockers man! I'm switching over to bluetops or MSD50's when I get a new turbo. Like I said though...they hold pressure fine.

Pull the plugs after it has sat for an hour and see if any are wet. Usually, tho', pressure drops quickly on a leaky injector.

Check to see if the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds when you first turn the key on.

Yeah, I can usually hear the FP run for a second. I thought that was normal? I have AC 42 plugs in it now, but I'w switching in a set of 43's tomorrow along with a new O2 sensor. Think that may clear the problem?

that is normal....maybe, maybe not...I would doubt it....sounds like it is flooding at least one cylinder...maybe a sticky injector.

Anytime I have backfiring I would check that the cam sensor is not 180 degrees out.

If you heard backfiring, you would wonder why some fool of a thief was trying to steal a car with no tires on it...

WTF Steve? Anyway, car only sputters here and there on start up. While running, the car never misses a beat and it's running really well. The car is driving better than it ever has, just this rich start up. Hopefully I'll have time to finish getting the hotter plugs and new O2 in this afternoon. Thanks,

Justin

That's the reason it sounds like a funny injector even tho the pressure is staying up....if you find a wet plug, put new plugs in it, crank it up, and while it is running, take something like a 10" long, 3/8" socket extension and hold it against the injector that had the wet plug.

Hold it at an angle aiming down against the lip and lightly tap it with a hammer..not hard enuf to break the injector shell, obviously....want to try to vibrate the inside of the injector and make it free up, it it is sticky.

Before any of that, tho. Does it belch black smoke when trying to start? Just wondering if it has too much gas or not enough gas.....

It will put out very little black smoke. It cranks for too long on startup, but did that with a brand new battery also. I'll try the injector thing and see what I can do. Thanks Steve!
