That's a modified Porsche unit. We used to use something like it in FF1600 and FF2000. You may be able to find something like it in a junk yard but you'll still need to make it a longer chasis.

So is it hopeless? Do I have to extend the frame if I want it to fit?[/QUOTE]

What trans? Like the one in your link? I don't know . I know that the Fiero's that are used for the Lambo conversion, they extended the frame 10.5 inches to make the body fit but not for anything else. Using any of the auto TH425 or the TH325, you would lose your trunk, most of it any way. You can also do a reverse rotation with TH 425 and have the motor face the back by flipping the differential for better weight distribution thus giving you a better handling on the road course.

Sorry guys I am doing the same thing.I have a 88 Formula with a built 3.1 v6 and cold air set up with 5 speed and its not fast enough.I have an 87 gn complete 58,000 mile engine on stand that I would love to put in the Fiero.Trans are the problem until I dug and have talked to a few friends of mine (John Carfaro who left Pontiac in 89 and went to Gm to design the C5 corvette) saying that they used the same space frame just tweaked it a little..including the transaxles. So for christmas I bought myself a wrecked rear clip of a 2007 C6 with transmission .So going to mount the transmission to the transaxle no torque tube. Then bolt up the transmission to an adapter thanks to V8 archie and then yes might have to remove the trunk but still will keep the fiero looking like the fiero.Updated to supercar specs...I know alot of guys have great ideas and projects end up staying projects with good intentions. But I have loved Fieros since I was 18 and a Pontiac man for 24 years since my first car was 69 GTO.
Pontiac might have been tossed away by GM...like the Fiero (lets not say how many buick models gm threw away)But to combine everything good of GM from the Fiero to the Gn engine and finally an update transmission to work what a powerhouse it would be.

what about a turbo 3.1 setup? There was a factory car like that. The northstar is popular too. I thought there was a factory 5 speed with getrag gears just like the ones with the quad 4's that was used with the 2.8 in 87-88? Couldn't that be adapted to a 3.8?

Turbo Grand Prix. The 282 that came with the Fiero has a shorter gearset than the HM-282 from the quad. Both use 60* FWD bellhousing's.

The Fiero never came with a 3.1 engine.
