240z

hi im new to the board. i just bought a 71 240z with 87 gn motor and 700r trans. someone here might know the car it came out of jersey i think cause its got a jersey inspection sticker from 09. but i was told the cr suppose to run in the mid to lower 10s on race gas tune. i have runit on pump gas tune left on 0lbs of boost and it went a 7.35 in the 1/8 i forgot to lock the converter up in second, so i swaped chips and put the reds 100 chip in it and it rolled black smoke and would not turn but about 4000 rpms it was like it had a 2step on. anyone had a problem like this i would like to make some good passes in the car before i sell it.

You need to provide more details so an analysis can be done. What is the engine combo, i.e., turbo or any mods? Are you sure it is a 700r? What converter? What gearing? How much boost? What does the car weigh? What tires? What was the AFR on the run?, etc, etc. 7.35 = 11.50s, which is not bad but I think you are leaving a lot on the table if it has the wrong gearing in such a light car and if the tune is off.

When I first setup my GN/240Z, I had a Red's chip and it ran so rich and so bad, I thought something was wrong with the engine until Orlando_87GN clued me in to a better chip. It was a new car after that.

Why are you looking to get rid of it? Post up some pics.

Oh, this is John's old car? Then we know what it is capable of. Put some race gas in it (or an alky system ) and turn up the boost. You are leaving at least 100hp on the table

I think I know what is wrong. If the 02 sensor is not up to snuff the computer go off the old memory witch it learned off the old chip. I would try a new 3 wire headed 02. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes then drive it around at different engine speeds and that should do it. The other is air filter is plugged up. When I had it I had a big KanN on the end of the air sensor. There should be a black binder with the car that had all the stuff that was on the car when I sold it with part numbers or applications of the parts that I used and how to tune it and a copy of the factory manual. The 100 chip has 29 deg. of timing. Only use that with 100 of c-16 fuel or you will pop the head gaskets max boots is 21-22 psi the injectors are not big enough to go any higher. That’s why I used alky with M10 nosel that came on at 14# then M15 at 19# and that was good to 24# but some one took that off I don't see it in the photo. Or just keep at 14# and that would be safe. I hope this helps.

yea someone took the nozzles for the alky inj, the tank is still there. i have keep race gas in it the whole time ive had it. cause i know haw these cars like to kick out head gaskets. my buddy here is a big gn guy here (chris hogland) and he is going to do some tuning on it for me first thing is put bigger injectors, 72lbs then turn the boost on up. i have got a rattle in the top end i got to find before i do anything hoping its a lifter but probably a piston. John thanks for the info figured someone here would know the car, so it went 10.17 with you or was that a different car listed. thank you to scotty

Don't waste your money on a heated O2 sensor, nothing more than a gimmick for these cars. If you are running leaded fuel (or not) you'll want the Denso sensor which is cheap, simple and works great with race gas:

The same one212/212 comp cam.it worked the best for that combo. The heads and intake had some work done to them. Sounds like they did not have added the ZDDP with the oil chang. the valve springs where set at 100# on the seat.
