V8 turbo Datsun Blown up

Last Saterday Dad was trying to get his license for9.99-8.50. The day was hot and pushing the car did not help. This is what happens when you push an engine with weak rods.

They were 850 HP 5.7in. Manly rods. they will work to that point. With the trans that shifted in to OD at low RPM and the turbo boost spike I think it detenated enuff with 91 gas for a split sec. We are going to use Howards 6in.rods raded at 1200 HP. and a comp roller turbo cam a little bigger than the one we had in there with a 14 deg. lobe seperasion.

rods at fault, here....Breaking the rods at the big end, is the big ?? A rod, being a member in compression, will have it's weakest point at the middle, not at the heaviest part of the beam. I'd be looking at other indicators.
Plug readings.
Tops of the pistons.
Bearings. [Rods and mains]
Were the rods a matched set?
Stepping "up" to a better rod may not be the cure, if you don't find out what caused the problem, in the first place.
Rating a rod by "HP" is hokey, to begin with.[Advertizing hype]. Max cyl psi occurs at max torque, not max HP...

plugs and pistons had no indaction of detenation the head gaskets were stressed a littel. the crank came through and is still srate and just needs a palish job. I think it was too much boost a low RPM with a short rod.
