Post Picking up my 80 242 2dr volvo GN swap.

I picked it up for $200 Its all there just waiting to be picked up on sat. This will be better than my 740 wagon as it it 500 pounds lighter. I can shave off a 100 or so so it will bee 6 tenths faster than my wagon would ever be. The stock car is 2700 to 2800 pounds, so that is a good place to start.
I would like to thank my bother John Lindsay for helping me out with the wiring harness on the 87 GN motor. I am sure he has saved me lots of work in trying to figure what is what. I will be starting a web page soon as I get the car this week end so I will keep you guys posted.. I don't think any one has done a 242 Gn swap so I will be the first. I will keep in mind that there is always some one faster than you are.

Weight is important to the fast et's and impressive MPH.

500lbs is 50free HP!

Sounds like you will be king of all sleepers.....

How well do the differentials in the Volvos hold up? Do they have posi... if not may be time to break out the MIG and weld it up for a spool .

Well they don't , but a lot of guys are putting 5.0s and chevy 350s with no problems. So we will see how it goes. If not The rear ends are a dime a dozen around here. I just dont want to keep replacing it over and over. I am looking into another rearend. But to find one that is 55" is not going to be easy.. If you know of a rear end that is 55" from out side to out side let me know so I can hunt one down and weld that puppy in with posi or lsd.
thanks
Chris

Chris,

I believe a Lincoln Versailles (sp?) has a 57" 9" rear-end. That is 1" wider on each side which can be easily made up with wheels with a deeper backspacing. You would have to get a R&P as the Versailles has some crazy ratio like a 2.57:1, but nothing more easy to get than a Ford 9" R&P.

Well the wreaking yard has one. $750 with disk brakes. I have read some are 58 or 59 but That ford falcon 8.5 is 58" I know I could get the off set but I would not be able to rotate the tires. I know I am picky but I am going to drive this car everyday as I have a long drive to work. My friends rear end is not going anywhere fast so in no hurry. If I could find a lincon rear end like that that no one really knows about I would jump on if for a few bills but no more. I the goal of this project was to stay under 3k. The motor and trans where 2k. So right now I am at about $2600 , and the volvo will put it at $ 2800 which does not leave much room for drive shaft and nick nack of that sort. I can tell you one thing this winter is going to be Monster Garage time.

I think the Volvo rear end will handle the power well. It is either Dana 1030 or 1031 (after 1983 it was 1031 if I remember right). The newer one will accept lower gears, the older one has smaller bearings and it has to be 3,73:1->up to 5 and something.

I have that 1031 with 3,31:1 gear in my Opel GN twinturbo and I haven't had any problems (in fact the grip is so bad that the rear won't be punished hard). A friend of my drives Rallycross (hard use) his 400 hp Volvo with "no clutch-gearbox" and the original rear end with tightened limited slip holds up.

Volvoman,
I thought I was the only one doing this swap.
I'm currently bastardizing my 78 242GT, although I've only been prepping and accumulating parts so far.
If you read this post, shoot me an e-mail. I have a bunch of issues that I still have to work out before I tear in.

well I'm glad that I'm good at cutting wiers. I think that you will spend $1000 more than you think. Just ask Scottie it never stops you just keep wanting to go faster! HE HE

If I get all the bills paid off I might just beable to do that. I first have to talk my wife into a rollcage.. She thinks if I have one I will drive faster on the street. What sometimes I wish I would not have explained the drag rules for cages and all. Oh well I must have this done my 2 week in May as there is a Volvo swap meet and car show. :P
