Unhappy Help... failed emissions!!!! high NOX

Hi All

I need help ... I failed emissions test on high NOX using a TurboTweak 36lb emissions chip!!! FP was set to 38psi off according to Eric's instruction.

driiving 2525 test
HC (llimit - 90) - 81
CO (llimit - 0.50) - 0.03
NOX (llimit - 979) - 1878 <-- failed

curb test
HC (llimit - 300) - 70
CO (llimit - 1.50) - 0.01

I just checked the EGR & Cat and they both functions/looks good. I've got another cat & EGR that I am going to put on.

What else can I check for!!!!! The motor (3000+ km) is slightly modded with ported upper & lower intake, 62mm TB and some headwork.

I don't really want to start swapping parts so any HELP would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss. PM me if you know of a friend of a friend of a friend ....

thanks in advance.... dave

Humberto...

I took the cat off, and it was not plugged. I could see straight through. I did notice oily toward the bottom.

This is the same cat I used to pass 2 years ago... on a completely stock 180k motor... NOX = 35.

dandman... Ken S. suggested putting in the stock cat back in but it's not that easy... I have to change the headers back to stock. Unless someone can fashion a 2 1/2" downpipe to fit my Kennebell headers.

Maybe, I can get some "legit" shop to put the headers back & count it toward my $450 limit.

Does anyone know if I get the $450 repair pass... that I should be OK for future license renewals since it does not have to go through anymore emissions test????

Have you talked to Eric about your results?
I know on the other board, they have a pretty good emissions section, and might be able to give you some tips on how to lower those high NOX #'s without having to do alot of mechanical work. Sometimes gasoline additives can help skew the numbers. Do a search and see if there is one that lowers NOX.

HI Paul

I did check with Eric... The EGR setting is enabled. ANd the most probable cause for high NOX is the EGR system. He also said the low BLM should be fine as the computer will adjust accordingly

I haven't had very much response on the TECH forum or the other site. I have been searching both sights trying to figure out what could be wrong with my EGR system. I did find:
- intake gasket blocking EGR ports to the heads
- too low FP will cause car to run rich as it tries to compensate for the low FP. That may be a reason my BLMs were around 112 instead of 128
- ported lower/upper intake causing the front cylinders to run a little dirtier.

I thinking about putting back the stock chips and running just the stock chip. I was going to pull the upper intake and taking a look at the lower intake EGR tower & see if it may be blocked. I was also going to replace the EGR... at which time, I will check to see if there is any blockage to the heads. If this weekend is good... I might switch back to stock headers & DP.

I am at a loss... If anyone else has any suggestions, quick fixes or a "friend of a friend that knows somebody".... let me know.

dave

Cool

Try 4 parts gas to 1 part methyl hydrate.
Run the stock chip.
Nice and clean,cool burning.

Methyl hydrate aka gas line antifreeze.
Use plenty like Radius Kid says
I've use it on my last two tests and I pass no problem.

Dave seems to me your running around confused and going to take your car apart because of emissions.........
First off, you made a mistake going to the gm dealer for an emissions test........why would you go to the most expensive place on the planet to get your car tested?
See the trouble you have to go through now!

Take it to Canadian tire and have it retested with the few tips from the other board (fuel additive).
You seem to make the simplist of things into your own nightmare.

Good luck.

Question

Dave,

I assume you are getting your 86 T-Type tested? If so why not let it wait until next spring, assuming you don't drive it in the winter? If you left it until next spring the car would be 20 years old and then it wouldn't require an emissions test. Again this is only if you park your car for the winter.

Good luck,
