Question Cell phone input needed

Hi guy ! I'm looking to get a cell phone (I know, I know, it's about time I moved out from the stone age ) I know next to nothing about them so, I'm looking for input on what you guys use.
Type, plan, contracts, rates, coverage. Bell, Fido, Rogers, Virgin mobile.
Tell me your likes, dislikes, who to stay away from, hidden costs, start up fees, etc.

Thanks
Paul

What ever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances sign a plan with Bell Mobility,

I got Raped for over 700.00 even after they admitted their mistake but because their rep did not do their job they could not fix the problem...

They said they would give the rep that made the mistake some coaching so the mistake did not happen to someone else...

Bottem line...

Bell Sucks...

just my opinion....

Bill

I hear you and agree with you, LOL, but it is getting to be a pain in the butt trying to find a working phone booth nowadays, when I need to make a call and I am not at home. This is just going to be a dial out, low usage tool for me.

Bill
Thanks for the heads up.

Keep the input coming guys

Hmmmm.
I'm with Bell and I like them a boatload better than Rogers.
I've heard good things about Telus and don't know anything about Virgin.
Do a search on cellphone reviews-Canada only.
Gecko Beach springs to mind as well as this one:

http://www.arcx.com/sites/PhoneReviewsList.htm
http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-phones/
http://www.geckobeach.com/cellular/default.asp

In case you're wondering,I recently bought an Audiovox PPC6600 Harrier.
I got tired of burning up regular phones at the rate of one every eight months or so[one year Manufacturer's warranty's ARE only good for one year-usually only one free fix].
I bought with one year and two extra years customer care for a total of three years of care.
Thank you very much.

We try.
I usually go to Google and do a search under cell phone reviews-search in Canada.
Lots of stuff out there.
Do a boat load of research, cell phones aren't cheap.
Maybe the pay as you play card plan is right for you?

Pay as you go

Hey Paul,

it sounds to me like you should purchase the "Pay as You go" cards from Bell. I keep an emergency cell phone in the van in case my wife breaks down anywhere and this is perfect for that. You buy the card with time and you have 3 months to use it. If you don't use it and you purchase more time you can carry over the balance.

Take care,

Ravi

I,ve been with Fido since they started $40 for 400 mins a month by the second! Now that Rogers owns them the coverage is much better but foir a newbie probably more like $60 for 400 with the add ons? Still a good price.

I did some looking last night and my head is spinning. Lots of small print to "carefully" read. (system access fees, extra costs for features, activation fees, contracts, etc.)
I agree with you guys on the "Pay as you go" type service. Fido has "per second billing," the others are per minute. Some, you have to buy the phone, others throw the phone in with a "contract." Type of phone?
I have a lot more reading to do.

Hey Ravi
A few questions for you about the wifes emergency phone.
Is this a locked in contract?
Did you have to buy the phone, or does it come with the package?
What is the total monthly cost?
How much are the cards?
Any other additional info is appreciated.
If you dont want to post this here, e-mail me

i'm having problems with my car backfiring under slight boost.(Read the "Cayuga hates my car" post) I have checked the coilpack and MAF against known good ones, and they are fine. I think I may know what the problem is, but must do some testing.

If you do pay as you go[cards],I don't believe you need a contract.
You just pay an activation fee and you're done.
Just keep a spare card with you and you're good to go.
Some plans will allow you to stack cards or carry over and some won't[IIRC].
You'll also find that different cards have different life spans.
Usually, the longer the talk time the card allows, the longer the unused "shelf life" the card allows.
In other words, once the card is activated, you must use it within a certain time period or the card becomes stale or inactive.
The larger cards usually have a longer "stand by" life after activation[again,IIRC].
If you buy a contract, you can get some pretty basic ones that should do well for you,but remember that there's a buy out if you decide to dump them[X # $ for every month remaining up to a fixed amount].
I remember my plan with Rogers.
The contract was next to impossible to read and was printed in light grey ink on powder yellow coloured paper.
Talk about tough to read.
You darned near needed a lawyer with a magnifying glass to read and understand it.
Crooks.

You've got me curious Bill, what happened?
I had called and requested a rate plan change from 100 daytime mins to 250 and evening and weekends start at 6pm instead of 8pm

The rep screwed up, charged me the wrong amount and did not give me the full plan I had requested, instead the only change was for the evenings starting at 6 pm,

thats when the hassle started, 4 months went by and they could not figure out why I was being charged daytime mins (over 100 each month) I argued and told them I have 250 daytime minutes and thats when one of their reps finally told me I only had 100 minutes a month still...

I told them right away it was an error and fix it and credit my money back...
they then said there is no notes on a rate plan change...
I said it was the same rep and same call when the evenings were switched to 6pm...

well it escalated all the way to the executive office after yelling matches with several managers that are not very polite....
the head manager lady for all of bell mobility actually told me she could see where the mistake was but because the rep didn't leave proper notes they cannot credit me back and make it right. but the kicker was she said she would give the rep some coaching so this never happens again..... this is over 8 months later and I gave up... there is no dealing with Bell. if you have a problem you are screwed
plain and simple...
plus it costs 200.00 plus tax plus a service charge plus something else to break their contract.
I was so pissed I payed the whole thing and terminated my service...
Screw me once shame on you... screw me twice shame on me... I don't think they'll ever have that chance,
Oh yeah and My Girlfriend is a Bell employee and we still got no where...

Grrrr... still pisses me off...
Bill
