Gas Tank Question?

Greeting all,

I have a question reqaurding the Gas tank on the Carbed car. Is there an in tank screen over the fuel inlet?

I having a problem with the 78 Monte "231 Buick non turbo". The car will start then stall and there is no fuel at the carb. If I let it set a minute. It will restart. It is acting like the fuel line is clogged or the screen. I don't not believe it is the fuel pump. Because if it where it would work at all. Plus after this stall and restart it stays running.

So since this is an old car, I believe the screen in the tank is clogged, but I never had a gas tank out of a Carbed car, So I don't know if there is a screen in there.

The next step for the car is I might stick a carb turbo setup on it. I think I still have enough parts lying around to do that.

The sending unit has a sock on the end just like a EFI car.

I have some spare parts if your missing anything.

I'm doing the valve spring over the winter. I'll have the turbo off, so I'll be putting yours on when I'm done. The 13's are within site, so between the springs and turbo, I think I'll make it easily.

Thanks Rich, I will pull the tank this weekend and do it right and blow the fuel line out I have a 3000 stall and a Trans brake for the GN. But I need a car when that is down, and having that stuff installed.

Fred....(Hey I like that name too... ), I had that problem too once. Mine was that there's a little check valve that can go bad at the end of the paper element, (fuel filter). This of course is only for the paper type filter not the bronze type.

I wound up changing two fuel pumps and was two hours short of going for the tank screen and blowing out the fuel lines. I thought it just could'nt be a fuel filter I know too much about carbs....

Well I learned no harm in checking. The filter was clean....but when I tried to blow through it...it would'nt. That is when I noticed that the little rubber piece at the end of the filter is actually a check valve.

I had a new one to compare it with and it blew throught easily. The bad one had the valve stuck. Well that's my story....that fixed that!!

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input. But when it acts up. I can remove the fuel line to the carb. Before the filter (I installed an inline filter). No fuel at all.

I doubt it is the pump because it would never pump fuel. So Saturday I'm going to drop the tank, clean the tank & Screen and blow the fuel line out.
